Matriarch is our Double India Pale Ale. Our main house IPA is, Mystic Mama. When crafting our DIPA I knew it had to be the mother of all mamas, so I poured in the hops, increased the malt and added some sugar to boot, and named it the Matriarch. Originally brewed in 2009, this beer has evolved into one hoppy mutha! When consumed fresh, do not aged, there are huge mango, pineapple, and apricot notes that bombard your nostrils. Flavor follows suit with the aromas, and the bitterness is firm. If you are lucky we might even have a keg of the double dry hopped version on draft at special events.

22oz bottle, bottled on 11/30/09, courtesy of MrChopin. Hazy marmalade color with a thin ring of white foam that never quit goes away. Candied orange peel and toasted malt on the aroma, maybe a hint of pine also. Big herbal bitterness, slightly astringent and vegetal with a hint of toasted malts. I dont think father time has been awesome to this beer, but all in all much better than I was expecting for a 5 month old DIPA.

On tap @ Vino Bellissimo / Lima OH --- Clear bright golden medium amber color, ivory head that slides down to a cover, sheets of lace. Taste is caramel malt, medium fizz, and citrus hops, with malt joining at the end for an encore. A beautiful strong IPA, complex, balanced, and yet, light in the belly which is always high on my list. Highly recommended.

Draft at LVille in Montrose. Small taster pour was amber-reddish-copper color and a one finger lasting head. Some lacing. The Aroma was big with fresh fruits like mango and apricots along with the sweet caramel and buttery aromas of malt. The taste is similar with the fruits coming through first and then the big malt backbone that was almost chewy. Medium body and carb. Super flavors and the finish is slight booze, but not bad at all. Well balanced.

On draft at Alexandrias in Findlay. Pours a clear Amber-copper with a white head. Nose is huge mango, guava, and pineapple, with bits of booze and some caramel. Flavor is similar with similar tropical fruit notes- guava, pineapple, tropical fruit with some mild caramel and a bit of booze. Medium in body, huge in profile, and fruit and booze lingering into the finish.

From a growler fill station at the Avon Heinens grocery store! Burnished golden color with a short lived off white head. Big tropical fruit, hop candy and alcohol nose. I think of beers like this as a hop flavor Jolly Rancher candy. So sweet with just gobs of tropical fruit, candied grapefruit rind, canned pineapple juice.and apricot jelly. There is a bit of bread crust in there too, the the balance, such as there is, is the raw sweetness versus the sticky hops. The alcohol is ever-present but not harsh. Not a subtle beer by any means, but is does showcase the "imperial" in IPA.

On tap at Local Cantina in Grandview. Dark gold pour, thin white head. Aroma of resin citrus hops. Tastes of caramel, earthy, tropical fruit, resiny. Even bitter and little spice in the finish. Palate is thin and makes such a big brew drinkable. Very nice.

A strong imperial IPA contains all the hallmarks of a typical Midwestern IPA. Evidence that the folks in Athens still have their A game, this took little effort to finish. If it had not been $7.50 for a full pint I might have ordered one after finishing a sampler.

Aroma / Appearance - A transparent bronze body shimmers as it filters out a quarter of the ambient light. Thin wispy head releases bursts of grapefruit, citrus, resin, and floor wax. A malty core binds everything together though it retains a strong tropical inspiration.

Flavor / Palate - A full creamy body hits the tongue with waves of rosy flavors and pine. Grapefruit, pine, and tree sap transition to a solid hop driven finish. While malt acts as a welcome glue there is no doubt what drives this beer - hops, hops, and more hops. I would love to get my hands on a fresh bottle of the double hopped version.

Draft at Jackie Os Brewpub, 7/14/14. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized creamy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of citrus, herbal hops, candied citrus. The taste is citrus, tropical hops and strong pale malt. Medium bodied, low carbonation, slight booze, moderate lingering bitterness. Nice.

Thanks to RussianDragon for pointing out that I neglected to rate this. From my old school notes: 23 Jan 2010 Shared by the former drinkndrive. Thanks Devin! The beer is golden orange with a small, soapy white head. Aromas of spicy malt, tropical fruit, booze. Bold and assertive flavor, with mango, pineapple. Resinous and full bodied, finishing with alcoholic warmth. Pretty tasty.

22 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange with off-white head that fades to the edge of the glass. Aroma is floral tropical fruit, hop bitterness and solid malt notes. Flavor is same, with prominence of alcohol in the finish. From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord Tasting).

On tap at Jackie Os. Pours gold with a decent head and huge aromas of mango, papaya, pineapple and a hint of resin. The papaya was a particular shock to me. Very strong presence in both the nose and flavor. Booze is obvious (board says 11.9% on this batch) and it says "Beware!"
