On tap at Sammy’s Gourmet Burgers & Beers, served in a chilled (sigh) shaker pint.
A: Arrived in the glass a deep russet brown, with a two-finger very pale tan head. Lacing on the glass was decent.
S: Unfortunately, due to the nature of the location and the kitchen therein, I was unable to get much of the nose. What I was able to detect involved light caramel-toffee malt notes.
T: In contrast to my experience with the aroma, however, this had flavor a-plenty, chilled glass notwithstanding! Caramel malts with hints of toffee form the backbone of the flavor profile, which is wound through with earthy bitterness. Somehow, the earthy hops do not overpower the sweetness, which is in my opinion a good thing. Some faint hints of butterscotch come through towards the middle, and it finishes as dry earth. There’s a touch of boozy warmth, which is not overstated.
M: Medium in both body and carbonation, this manages to be drinkable without fading to a watery finish.
O: A solid go at a wee heavy, able to use some hop presence without bringing it into the forefront to take over. DialSquare (5188) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 26, 2014
On tap at Daily Growler, UA - JO’s tap takeover. Deep brown pour. Aroma of dark malt and sugar. Tastes are smokey, grain, roasty, caramel. Good balance. Not to my tastes necessarily, but very interesting. 7.4 phaleslu (10911) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - SEP 23, 2014
Draft on the brewpub side of Jackie-O’s. Pours a hazy amber with a small beige head that leaves a sheet of lace in the glass and a small film atop the beer. Notes of caramel and toasted malts, nuts, brown sugar, earth - more sweetness and maltiness than peat, which works fine in this beer. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, malty mouthfeel. Good, simple Scotch (not Scottish, by Ratebeer standards) ale. alexsdad06 (11243) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - SEP 20, 2014
Draft at Jackie o’s. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have some sweet malts, caramel, mild smoked character, light peat, hints of fruit, with mild herbal notes, decent enough. Dfonorow (2318) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 31, 2013
Pour from a growler. Light amber with a small beige head. Aroma is of caramel, nuts, smoke, and roasted malts. Flavor is a bit strange with some smoke, light malts, and herbal hop qualities. Slight booze flavor in the finish.

On tap at Jackie-Os, $4 a snifter. Dark brown/red color, minimal light tan head, decent lace. Light, crisp carbonation, dry texture. Moderate, not over-the-top scotch aroma. Light hop bitterness. A little roasty malt, some booze. Not bad. A decent sipper. Beerman6686 (6611) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 5, 2011
This poured a darker reddish color with a beige head. Aroma was peaty, some caramel, and light nutty character. Flavor was herbally stale hops, sweeter maltiness and light smoke. chibuck (3521) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 4, 2011
draft... medium amber body... tons of peat on the nose... the taste is more peat but has lots of smoke, a little of caramel too, not my favorite style but worth trying deyholla (12590) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - DEC 4, 2010
Sampled from the tap at the brewery during the 5th anniversary party. Poured a hazy reddish brown with a white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was of a slight smokey peat with notes of light fruits and grains. Flavor started with light fruit with a strong growing peat profile and a bit of alcohol in the finish. On tap at the brewery. Appearance is a dark amber with an off-white head. Aroma is malty and sweet. Taste is caramel, roasty malt, smoky, and full of kickass. Medium bodied. I wish I could have some more of this right now.
