Bottle pour into pint glass from Redstone Liquors, Stoneham MA. Aroma is rich roasted malt with chocolate, fruit, some bready yeast and hints of coffee. Appearance is very dark reddish-brown color--almost opaque, with abundant sparkle and pillowy finger-width beige head with good persistence and nice lacing. Taste similar to aroma with dominant rich roasted malt sweetness but with smoke not noted in aroma before the chocolate and light bitterness of the coffee. Palate is medium to heavy bodied with thick texture and average to lively carbonation and nice, long balance of sweet and bitter finish. Overall, this is really nice. Though advertised as a black lager, it is here in the smoked category and is described as between a schwarzbier and a smoked porter. It really does dance between categories but is really good no matter what you call it. JK (6342) - St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA - NOV 1, 2015
GABF 2015. Red-brown color. Smoke in the aroma and the flavor. Dry, moderately roasted malt, but fortunately the smoke is there in both the flavor and aroma even if it is not as strong as the best rauchbiers. Some chocolate and coffee, but not much of either. 77ships (11481) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - OCT 17, 2015
330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Tim’s orgasmic Trillium tasting”. Dark brown, solid mocha. Nose is rather weak, touch umami, seems to show light oxidation, rest is wood, leaves & bark, smoke is very low. Taste is lightly herbal leaves, bit thin, mellow, some mocha powder, herbs, low smoke, herbs, bark. Body feels thinned out, bit weak, not very exciting with not my favored notes. Okay overall but nowhere near on par with their Smoked Märzen. It feels like there is some possible age at play here but since the bottle is not dated, there is no way to be certain. Bit of a letdown overall. ElManana (2079) - Scheldewindeke, BELGIUM - OCT 16, 2015
Bottle at tderoeck's place. Very wattery, light, even a light sour, light smoke, light chocolate. Meh. EvanFriend (655) - Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 3, 2015
Interesting. A bit of smoke flavor, some coffee as well, all underneath an herbal taste I can’t quite place. Not bad.

12oz bottle from TRT. Poured a deep dark chocolate brown, almost black, under a smaller foamy beige head. Aroma of light smoke, chocolate pudding, dark toast, cake batter. Medium to full body, average carbonation. Flavor isnt quite as food as the aroma, a bit subdued and less chocolatey with mote dark grains. Solid none the less. Pours clear cola-brown-to-black with a creamy, 1-finger tan head. Mild aroma of smoked malt with a touch of wood. Body is a bit lighter than medium. Slightly watery with a brief finish. Flavor of caramel malt mixed with some coffee. A bit of smoke at the back that lingers in the finish. r464 (2377) - Earth, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 31, 2015
Smooth, smoky aroma. Smoky malt, toast, and an earthiness. Hints of woody flavors as well. Very smooth finish. sir__v (2630) - FRANCE - JUL 29, 2015
Bottle from Saveur-Biere.com - Color: deep dark black beer with small carbonation and small brown head. Smell: oat domination. Notes of wheat. Smoked finish. Taste: lack of palate, oat taste, smoked malt and good bitterness. Easy drinkable. Aftertaste: malt and sweet smoked finish. Not my style. musinj6 (510) - Dedham, Massachusetts, USA - JUL 27, 2015
Pours a murky brown with small head and no lacing. Moderate smoke and chocolate aroma. Mild sweet and moderate bitter. Medium bodied with moderate, almost effervescent carbonation. Medium smoked finish. Good beer.
