3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a rich brown/black from a bottle. Nose of coffee, flavor similar with a nice roasted smokiness toward the end, some vanilla and even toffee notes mixed in a bit. Rather thin and almost cola-y. Good beer, and I’m not a particular fan of smoked beers.

Dark brown with a thin creamy head. Nose is light smoke, some bakers cocoa. Taste follows, smoke is light but there and works nicely with the chocolate and caramel malts.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sort of a mixed up brew, a lightly smoked, somewhat chocolaty and very dark lager... more or less a one-off. Guzzling a few out of a Lagunitas jar, not loving its complexity of odd flavors, but finding it quite oddly palatable nonetheless. Jack’s Abby is expanding the lager range in some pretty amazing directions.

I like this beer. Chocolate, coffee and lager. Yep it has created its own category. Great beer, different and strong trend setter. I will purchase more. The ending is burnt but that is ok. I taste a fire. Maybe overhaul ender. If I was a firefighter and I just put out a fire and was performing an overhaul this is the after taste in my mouth. They should re-market This beer and call it over haul. With a picture of a fire fighter on it after a sweaty night putting out a fire and ensuring safety.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle pour into pint glass from Redstone Liquors, Stoneham MA. Aroma is rich roasted malt with chocolate, fruit, some bready yeast and hints of coffee. Appearance is very dark reddish-brown color--almost opaque, with abundant sparkle and pillowy finger-width beige head with good persistence and nice lacing. Taste similar to aroma with dominant rich roasted malt sweetness but with smoke not noted in aroma before the chocolate and light bitterness of the coffee. Palate is medium to heavy bodied with thick texture and average to lively carbonation and nice, long balance of sweet and bitter finish. Overall, this is really nice. Though advertised as a black lager, it is here in the smoked category and is described as between a schwarzbier and a smoked porter. It really does dance between categories but is really good no matter what you call it.
