Sampled from a bottle, ØK 13. Clear brown coloured body. Sweet smell of caramel and liquorice. Dried fruiy taste together with sweet liquorice and syrup. Sweet ending offset by moderate notes of chili. Not bad at all, still very much on the sweet side (Copenhagen 25.05.2013).

The color is almost black and the head is stable, but little mellow. The aroma is limited to slightly roasted malt, which does not draw much attention to itself. The flavor is distinct salty licorice with tones of English licorice and after some time seasoned it with mild chili, which does not take over and act burning. The hops is not tasted, but since both licorice and chilli is used, it would almost be a shame of adding other flavor elements.

Bad bad bad. Unpleasant continuous light chili sting and maybe a light liquorice flavour. Why on earth would they bottle this?

0.33l bottle from Odense, Denmark... Strange chili and lakrids aroma... Missing the German ’Reinheitsgebot’... Sweet-spicy dark beer taste. I am not sure if beer hast to taste like that... Chili ending...

Bottle 330ml @ home
Pours clear deep golden/amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, corn, bread, caramel, licorice and vegetables. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a sweet malt, licorice and butterscotch finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft. I expected to get a little heat from chilies in this one but couldn’t find it.

Bottle. A small, off-white head sits on top of a clear, golden to amber body. There’s anise, bell pepper, diacetyl and caramel in the aroma. It’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, rather sweetish, with flavors of butterscotch, caramel, pale malts and some licorice and bitterness. Not much chili detected, if any at all. Licorice finish. A strange one indeed, and with the diacetyl so much present it isn’t interesting at all. 131004

Sort med hvidt skum. Dufter af kaffe og chokolade. Smagen markant af lakrids med lidt chili bid. Blød fornemmelse. En god balanceret lakridsøl.

Bottle, as "Otto Chili-Lakrids Øl", courtesy of Sjøbeck Øl & Vand, thank you so much Hanne. After a rather negative experience with a Texas-something chili porter from Mikkeller, I must confess that I was somehow dreading another chili beer. To my most positive surprise, this was nothing as such. The beer is dark greenish brown, with a sweet aroma of caramels and Malzbiere, not unlike some popular Baltic Porters from neighbouring countries. Theres a touch of cooked vegetables and a strong vein of olives in oil from the scent too. The nose expands onto olives in brine as the beer is on the glass. Flavours of Malzgetraenke, sweet as beet, but not cloying, a touch of Ovaltine, herbs, the aforementioned liquorice, a tiny pinch of salt, and the burning sensation of chili. Not sure wether the chili would be better if tasted or not, but all we get is the heat. It is totally bearable, and the beer can be thoroughly enjoyed with nice chunks of ciabatta. The texture is somewhat watery, and perhaps just as well, to balance any excess of sweetness and reduce the pepper heat. Nice, with a smile.

Benzai (16500) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 17, 2013
Bottle shared with Dutchdrebus @ weekly tasting. Deep dark red color, small beige head. Weird aroma of liquorice and something I can’t quite put my finger on. Taste malts, chili, liquorice and weird. Don’t like it at all.
