Draft. Burnt toffee malt and cherry aroma. Dark brown with small head. Sweet raisin, toffee malt, and moderately bitter herbal/alcohol flavor. Full bodied. BelgianBeerGal (4086) - Panama City, Florida, USA - AUG 13, 2013
Flight draft in Ludington. Dark brown pour with a white ring. Still looking. No real aroma. Nice flavor though with caramel malt and a hint of earth. Nice. mmmbeer (1426) - Austin, Texas, USA - MAY 26, 2012
5 oz. sample on 5-20-12 (Flight 2)-served a very dark brown with a ruby tint color, very sugary nose. Hits the mouth hard with a medium body, malt was strong, sugar in the middle was strong, and the finish of alcohol was strong. Whew! holdenn (2116) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 18, 2009
On tap at the brewery. Pours murky brown with a mahogany beige thin head. Light aromas of fruit and malts. Malty fruity flavors. Dried fruits, peat, and a touch of alcohol with a pleasant earthiness. Not bad. badnewsbeers (2312) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - JUL 5, 2008
had this at the third annual MBG winter beer festival...the numbers are reflective of the sampling, however i added no notes. my apologies.

Part of a sampler at the restaurant. I note that I had a cold when I visited and could not get a great sample of the aroma of the beers that I sampled. Not bad beer. Good hop flavor. gws57 (1276) - Saint Charles, Illinois, USA - AUG 27, 2007
Had this one on draught as part of the sampler at the brewpub in Ludington, Michigan. Best scotch ale I’ve ever had. Cloudy, dark brown pour with a foamy tan head. Almost bizzare cedar nose and taste, with an awesome smooth maltiness, no alcoholic aftertaste. Wow. Silphium (3199) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - MAY 30, 2007
On tap at the brewery. Muddy orang-brown body, thick cream head. Earthy, toasty aroma with nice sweetness. Creamy palate, with lots of brown sugar and toast, accentuated by light peat. Long, bitter, earthy hops finish. I detected a hint of apple, too. Alcohol is warming but not overbearing. Average complexity. This beer sipped nicely after a long day in a bog and cedar swamp. beerbuzzmontreal (3487) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 11, 2007
Pours a clear brown color with ruby highlights and a ring of offwhite lace. Weak aroma of toffee and earthy malts. Mild flavor of toffee and earthy malts, the flavor is stronger than the aroma but still the malt feels weak and thin. Light to medium body with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. hezron (614) - Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 6, 2005
All the brews were here were served really cold, so I ordered this one and let it sit for a while to warm up. This may have caused the aroma to be a little flat as I could just get a little dark caramel, but it was good. Great mahogany brown color with just a little light showing through the edges. Diminishing, creamy, off-white head. Brown-sugar, caramel, some peat malt (smoke?). Initially good flavor, thin middle and a warming finish with lots of good flavor: brown sugar and another hint of that peat/smoke flavor. Medium body, alcohol in the finish.
