Icedwarf (1758) - Etten-Leur, NETHERLANDS - SEP 5, 2015
PMPRNL versie gedronken.

Maybe I should start with the list of ingredients: besides the ordinary beer ingredients, Jessenhofke uses brown sugars, burnet (pimpernelle), savory, hyssop, thyme, mirthe and garlic! Whet do you think now? Well, I think I thought the same - but it’s not that disgusting! Honestly, it’s not disgusting at all. It’s different, sure, and the taste is obviously very complex. But it’s well balanced, has a flowery sweetish mouthfeel and a nice heavy alcoholic finish. It’s so different and against the stream of the IPA hype that it’s something I really can appreciate. A challenge for beer sommelliers and a nice beer from time to time. This is not a normal beer - it’s like a well composed dish! You don’t know what’s in, you cannot differenciate all the ingredients but the taste composition is lovely.

Borefts VI. Day 2. ’Craig has blue nipples’ post fest tasting in his room. Light haze on this pale gold beer, good fluffy white head. Airy palate. Mild floralness and light sweetish esters. Dried fruits. Light finish. Okay, bit hollow for it’s abv.

Bottle split in Craigs room, Borefts Day 2 after party tasting, 27/09/14 thanks to the person who brought this number. Lightly hazed orange with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is citric peel, grainy, spice, caramel. Taste comprises tangy citrics, lemon zest, straw, light spice, orange squash. Medium bodied, spritzy and overcarbed, semi drying close. So so, not much going on certainly when you take the 8% ABV into account!

Spice ale since 2010 with the garlic that typifies Jessenhofke but also fresh herbs grown by Sanguisorba in Ranst, a well-known brewery supplier of herbs and spices. The herbs in question are salad burnet, hyssop, thyme, savory and myrte. Snow white, regular head, misty peach blonde colour. Complex ’herbalness’ in the nose as can be expected, difficult to distinguish one from the other even though I am familiar with their aromas, very flowery, some candi sugar, some fruits and, as in the other Jessenhofkes, no noticeable garlic. Sweetish spiciness in the mouth and, much to my surprise, there it is: a faint hint of garlic in the background. Light mouthfeel, sweetish caramel malt base, dry finish with the spices further developing alongside a herbal hoppiness. Interesting if you are into spice beers.
