Jester King Gotlandsdricka

RATINGS: 149   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.45/5   EST. CALORIES: 198   ABV: 6.6%
Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Gotlandsdricka (6.6% alcohol by volume) is brewed with birchwood smoked malt, juniper and sweet gale. It’s unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated through re-fermentation in the bottle.

My Bottom Line :
Wooden smoke, yellow pear esters and bay leaves ride this brew’s excited effervescence, leading to a bubbly, yeasty and smoky finish.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam sits atop the misty gold.
-This is basically halfway between a Saison and the Gotlandsdricka I had years ago. Carbonation is through the roof (Saison-like), yeast character is rather expressive (Saison-like), but the flavors imparted by the rest of the ingredients are reminiscent of that Gotlandsdricka (salient wooden smoke, rye, fruity leaves, etc.)
-The only other beer I can think of which is similar to this one is Hopfenstark’s Boson de Higgs.
-The very high levels of carbonation get in the way of the finish, washing away most of the complexities.

bottled, thanks to bu11zeye, amber color, fruity with a dry sweet grape essence, liked this better than most of the genre

Clear gold, cloudy white head. Aroma is smoke, juniper. Flavour is woody, funky, a little barnyard... Salt/brine. Excellent stuff.

Bottle. Strong juniper and smoked malt aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet smokey barley malt flavor with a lightly bitter juniper finish. Excellent.

Bottle from drowland, from homer321. Surprisingly carbonated, hazy pink with no head. Floral nose and taste, pretty solid.

8/23/13. 750mL bottle thanks to Homer321. Hazy golden pour with a nice off-white head. Light briney smoke aroma, some sweet fruits, doughy malts. Much smokier flavor, smoked bacon, woody, earthy, really porky and meaty without having that salty sensation - it reminds me of a nice smoked mild cheddar or gouda - hints of doughy malts and floral aspects. Surprisingly tasty.

Bottle:   Brownish straw, dirty and muddy, thin frothy white head, little lacing.   Floral and spicy herbal nose.   Very unique.   Also seems to be smoked.   Floral and herbal spices on the nose, followed by a nice sweet smokey maltiness.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes very herbal, not as floral, with diminishing smoke.   Not on par with the likes of Adam, but certainly a nice and unique brew.   Could stand to be a little heftier.   Other than that, enjoyable and different, with a strong herbal persense.   Thanks Bill!

Pours a cloudy yellow color with fluffy white head. Aroma is sweet initially and then some presence of smoke. Smoke and wood in the flavor with fading to some sweetness and slight astringency. Very carbonated and light bodied. As with all JK I’ve had so far, not impressed.
