COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Sour Brown Ale. In Britain, what started out as young or “mild” dark ale was once aged in oak barrels to make something that was likely similar to sour brown ales of East Flanders. Using a similar base recipe to Commercial Suicide Dark Mild, Ol’ Oi! is Jester King’s tribute to that tradition.

[750 ml. bottle split by two @ Boxing Day Tasting][Bottled 14.01.2016] Dark brown red ruby with a tanned head. Nose is pleasant woody vinegar, sour, red berries. Taste is good medium USA sour vinegar, puckering, acidic, woody, red berries, balsamic vinegar, sour berries,... Vaguely almost watery, lacks some body but otherwise a very nice puckering woody vinegar USA sour with the regular Jester King sour profile. A nice one especially a few very disappointing Jester King beers.

Bottle at Uncle Babe’s in Ghent. Jester King’s take on classic Flemish red. Thick, dense, frothy, lacing, pale greyish white head, very dark chestnut brown colour with mahogany hue. Aroma of passion fruit, old hazelnut shells, some caramel, sherry vinegar, balsamico, wet wood or even a hint of old furniture, redcurrant, dry red wine. Vividly fruity onset, redcurrant, passion fruit and unripe blue plum accents, medium carbo, lean mouthfeel, bit vinous, supple middle with nutty maltiness and a caramelly hint through which a drying fruit tartness and eventually drying wood tannins run, bit wineish and sherryish finish with a powdery, bready yeast accent in the end as well as a very light toastedness and persisting drying sourness. Perhaps a tad too sour like many American interpretations of the style, but in this case well backed with a rounded maltiness, making this very accomplished at what it intends to be. Lovely oud bruin!

Draft at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014. Pours clear amber with a foamy, white head. Moderately funky and sweaty, with leathery berry character. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly tannic on the finish, with more aged, leathery berries, sturdy funk. Good one.

Bottle. Hazy hazelnut brown with a large tan head with good retention, lace and regeneration. Strong nose. Cognac, dark wood, sourness, flowers, light tobacco. Flavour follows: Dark wood, tobacco, twigs, flowers, berries, minerals, dark bread. Medium/full body, fine carbonation, some sweetness, medium/heavy sour. Lactic sour finish. Pretty much what I expected, but fairly sour and not really my favourite style anyway.

750mL bottle courtesy of a secret Santa I don’t remember when, pours a murky reddish brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of oak and citrusy lemon Brett, with light caramel and toffee. Taste of oak and sour funky barnyard Brett hitting leather into earthy dusty toffee and caramel malt. Solid!
