Draft at BMRAF 08. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy caramel & sour citrus aroma. Medium body with a slick texture. Brown- apricot body. Sweet caramel and grapefruit nose. Flavors of citrus, lemon grass and "boiled hops" (boiled hops?? yep. can’t think of another way to explain it). Dry hopped finish.
Firkin version at Barley’s 6th Annual Mini RAF (04/26/08): The beer is a mostly clear dark amber color with a medium thin beige head that dissipates steadily. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of malt, nuts and caramel along with a touch of hops. The finish is malty with a light hops aftertaste. Fairly run-of-the-mill overall. Sampled on draft at the Monroeville PA location this beer poured a light ruby-mahogany color with a small khaki head. The aroma was sour, tangy, tart and bitter. The flavor was tart, tangy, almost vinegary and had an element reminiscent of windex. The finish was tart and bitter.

I had this on tap in Manchester, CT. It was dubbed "EKG ESB". I will rate it here. EKG stands for East Kent GOldings, which they used primarily in this. Quite a mild aroma with slight fruitiness and maybe a touch of citrus. This is very faint and not aromatic at all. Transparent copper/amber color with a light tan head. Fruity, vinous start with raisins and cherry notes. Mildly astringent. Finishes with caramel notes and lots of floral hops--this floralness is present in most of the JH’s beers in Manchester. Pours copper, with aroma of malt, caramel, hops. Tastes malty, with some hops, almonds, caramel, and earthiness at the finish. I felt that the hop presence added to the profile here, but I guess they imparted a more IPAishness than an ESBishness. Not a bad ESB but nothing really to write home about, the hoppiness may have been a little too much for the style, the back end of the flavors & body were really bitter & spicy, deep copper color, decent bubbly white head, nice lacing, good malt profile with hints of nuts & caramel, smooth & drinkable, excellent session beer

I am assuming that this is the ESB I had at the John Harvard's in NY. It was pretty drinkable, although there were more malts than hops in the flavor, and it was disappointingly not very bitter at all. More like a cross between a bock and a dry Scottish ale or Brown ale. Thin body. The finish is decent and smooth.
