John Henry Three Lick Spiker Ale is an imperial stout brew style that has been bourbon oak aged. This beer is brewed with three different dark roasted malts creating chocolate flavors and a dark appearance. Oats are also added for additional body and flavor. Combined with the pale and caramel malts, there are over 12,000 lbs. of barley in the brew. Cascade, Willamette, and Alsace Hops are the three hops added for a hoppy tasty and full aroma. After fermentation has been completed with our top fermenting ale yeast, conditioning starts and the fun begins. We condition our brew with bourbon oak and let the extended aging process take over. Hints of bourbon and vanilla from the oak come through in the aroma and flavor. This is a big beer that you can not pass up.

Well. The script boasts IS, yet RB defines it as an ASA. I would personally consider it the latter. [A] Chocolate, wood, vanilla, caramel, and whiskey aromas. Appropriate. [A] A chocolate brown to very bright light, but otherwise opaque. Tannish head, that fades. [F] Hints of smoke and licorice upfront. Mid-bodied chocolate, caramel. Finishes with a hint of vanilla, oak, spirit and milk chocolate. Tastes of a foreign stout/ dark fruitiness begin to show through the oak complexities. [P] Light bodied for a "stout". I have to say drinkability for an ale of this profile and ABV is phenomenal. [O] For +9%, I would never guess it. Does teeter between an ASA and stout. But the mouth and body, again, would have me choose ASA. Doesnt matter what it is, I enjoyed it, highly recommend it, and would gladly grab a 6-er/

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is a really nice oak and bourbon with some sweet molasses in there. Flavor is a nice almost leather tannin with more of the oak and bourbon. Finish is very earthy and a rich molasses. There are some crappy ratings for this beer but I thought it was extremely flavorful with oak and bourbon and it hides the alcohol well. I dont smoke cigars much anymore but this would be the perfect cigar beer.

"bought at total wine having no idea what to expect. had a few sips before i looked it up here and went and scared myself. kinda surprised to see imperial stout - the impression i get is strong brown ale. a little boozy, but still a little thin. a hint of bourbon specific booziness in the aroma and flavor (a little more in the aftertaste). maybe a cheaper bourbon? i love me some bourbon stouts and this doesnt hold up terribly well in either class. not entirely bad, though. just not up to par with other bb impy stouts, and a little oversweet. woulda made a better impression in a taster, but by the end of a full glass, i was done."

Poured very dark with virtually no head. Notes of caramel, chocolate, malt, vanilla. Has a very pleasant aroma. Very little carbonation and a thin body. Not much bourbon flavor (which I dont care for) but a long, sweet aftertaste with some mild bitterness. Overall a good but not great beer that could use a bit more carbonation.

12 oz bottle. The pour is a darker brown with a lot of ruby in and around it with a thinner light tan head that fades down quickly to just a ring. The aroma is quite complex and good. Initially there is a strong sweet maltiness. Almost like a really sugary caramel. The deeper it gets, the lore of a earthy wood comes up, and ever-so-slowly the bourbon rolls into the picture. The flavor is surprisingly light. It's pretty malt dominated with a nice sweetness, but the bourbon definitely fails compared to the oakiness. The mouth feel is really thin with not much help by carbonation. The aftertaste is lingeringly sweet with a light woody flavor ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wonderful oak roasted malt aroma on initial pour. Flavor of bourbon oak spirals comes through on every sip but unlike bourbon not really hot, more mellow and smoothing taste of the ale balancing out the roasted malt. A great session beer. Gets more robust and complex as it warms a bit and is exposed to the air.

Rated on 01-30-2012. This bottled beer has a medium sized semi-fizzy tan hed with a short retention, opaque dark brown body, very little carbonation observed, and one ring of lacing. This beers aroma is caramel malt, chocolate, roasty, oak, hops, suggestion of dark fruits, vanilla, and bourbon. The flavor is semi-sweet, vanilla, malt, roasty, oak, and bourbon. The mouthfeel is soft carbonation and thin. This beer is medium bodied. This is a quaffable sipping beer with a good flavor that is worth trying. This is a beer I would drink again.
