COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Also known as Porter 68.
Brewed in small batches and limited quantities, Fine Porter is the first of the John Sleeman Presents series. Taken right from page 68 of the family recipe book, it pays homage to the original Porters of Great Britain, and was brewed by George Sleeman back in the 1800s.
Tasting Notes: Fine Porter is one of the more flavourful styles of ale. It has a rather bold, malty taste and a deep, rich colour.

If I’m picking a porter, I will NOT choose this one. But if I’m looking a normal alcohol content English/Scottish Ale, I would have no problems picking this beer. It’s smooth and doesn’t have a lot of the malted bitter taste of many porters. I would compare this to Bass Ale.

Pours an average foamy brownish head. Weak lacing. Has a clean coppery/brown appearance. Light roasted malt aromas as well as raisins and mild toffee notes. Flavours of toffee, light roasted malts, nuts, and toasty malts too. Some hints of caramel. Slight crisp bitterness on the palate. Smooth, fairly creamy, bubbly and drying mouthfeel. Tingling sensation. Medium bodied. Nice and easy going down. Good stuff.

bottle. Poured clear deep brown with a creamy beige head. Aroma is roasty and slightly astringent. Medium-light bodied, average carbonation, sticky finish. Flavour is heavy on the malt, notes of espresso and bitter chocolate, herbal hops, a bit resinous

Bottle, as Porter 68, US import. Retro rating from when in California. Poured almost black with a small tan colour head. Aroma is malty, light roasted, some chocolate. Light sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, rather too much carbonation, but that aside an ok porter.

probably the best of the Sleemans I tried, but that ain’t saying much. Light all around - look, flavor and feel. Nose is like a cross between a cola and a real porter. Not offensive, just weak.

Beardbeerman (341) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 28, 2014
Fluid pour with a rich brown shade and a reddish hue. The head quickly fades away to a central hazel layer. The nose expresses notes of fresh ground coffee with a light sweetness in the back. The taste offers a good deal of bold bitterness from the hops which attack the back of the palate. Hints of coffee add some colour and you do get some chocolate but I thought it missed some kick to truly stand out. The mouthfeel is slightly effervescent and oily, ending somewhat vapory. Overall I found this one less flavourful than other Porters I so far had the chance to try out. It lacked some sweetness which is a key feature of this beer type. I still have to point out that this Porter isn’t in any way brewed with any sweetening agent (such as maple syrup), not that it excuses anything.

rederic (3341) - montréal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 29, 2013
341ml clear bottle, dark brown color, with a fluffy tan-kaki head, with a light biscuit, toasted, caramel, bready, toasted, chocolate malt, faint nutty nose, with a toffee, toasted bread crumbs note, with some pie crust, burnt dried fig, raisin, bran muffin accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a faint yeasty, light grainy toasted, caramel, biscuit, roasted malty, toffee, coffee, burnt toast character, with some flowery leafy hop, mild roasted grind coffee bean, burnt nut flavors, leading towards a toffee, caramel, toasted maltiness, burnt toast, roasty bitterness finish.

Colour is a very deep brown, with an attractive head and decent lace. Aroma is disappointingly mild, some mild biscuit and very faint coffee. Taste is an OK bitter, but lacks complexity. Feel is somewhat medium, but could be bigger to be more satisfying. Overall, a skippable porter.

lesifflebiere (1928) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 29, 2013
