Five beer enthusiasts with a common passion for historic brewing came together to create this distinct Polish beer style in the most authentic way we can think of after the brewery in Grodzisk Wielkopolski closed in 1993. It is brewed by Jopen and Monarchy of Musselland together with the beer writers Ron Pattinson and Evan Rail. We use 100% oak-smoked wheat malt, have the exact same gravity of 7.7 degrees Plato, employed classic Lublin hops and fermented with the original yeast. As the town once and again today belongs to Poland, but in the meantime was part of Prussia, there are two different names for the style: Grodziskie and Grätzer. Our research found that brewers also formerly used willow bark in brewing which we thought was an interesting variation. That is why we are offering two different takes on the style: a classic version bearing the name "Grätzer"and a willow bark version called "Grodziskie".

skortila (6032) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - MAR 25, 2017
Bottled. 33cl sample. Old note. The aroma is smokey, citric and somewhat herbal. Hazy, light yellow coloured beer with a medium sized white head. The taste is it light bitter, citric, woody. Thin bodied beer. Nice.

Pailhead (6543) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - DEC 4, 2016
Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate smoked cheese, mild wheat, banana, and very faint lemon. It pours a slightly hazy golden-orange with a small white head that quickly settles to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is some sporadic webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with mild wheat with a touch of lemon. The finish has light smoke and with a touch of straw. It’s light bodied with mild carbonation.

Moderate aroma of smoke, wood, lemon, and bread crust. Mildly soapy. Cloudy amber, thick lacy head. Smoky bread crust, oak overtones. Light to medium body, soft carbonation. Very woody, but oddly refreshing.

24/V/16 - 33cl bottle @ home - BB: n/a (2016-621) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Pretty cloudy beige yellow beer with lots of solid chunks or rather jelly things, creamy solid white head, very stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very floral, soapy, smoky touch, camp fire, funky notes. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, soapy, very smoky as well, dry, spicy touch. Aftertaste: mainly smoke, soapy bitterness, more smoke, soft acidity. Surprised about the low ratings on this one.

weihenweizen (4375) - Charleston, West Virginia, USA - MAR 30, 2016
Refrigerated 11.2 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Hazy light orange with small white. Aroma is smoked, light body, medium/light carbonation, and some lacing. Taste is tart, smoke, and some esters.

Zlotta (4395) - Hagen, GERMANY - JAN 11, 2016
0.33 l bottle from ’Plan B’ (Rotterdam), best before April 2014 (!). Minimally hazy, golden yellow with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish-malty, smoky and slightly fruity aroma of banana, apricot, smoked ham and some clove. Sweetish-malty, lightly sourish, smoky and slightly fruity taste of banana, lemon peel, vanilla, clove and smoked ham, followed by a short, slightly tart, smoky-spicy, medium dry finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and minimally astringent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Well-balanced, very refreshing and tasty stuff!

Small bottle on sale at Supermarket Liquors. Nice golden appearance with a lingering, fluffy white head. Aroma is hard to describe but it immediately activated my gag reflex. Similar flavor. Awful. Musty bread, old yeast, rotten cheese. I’ve had some bad beers and some infected beers but this... Wow. I literally could not smell it without wanting to throw up.

GenDV138 (8072) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - NOV 3, 2015
4 oz pour on draft at ChurchKey during the Freigeist Bierkultur Tap Takeover. Hazy yellow with off-white head. Aromas of tangy barbeque sauce, light honey. Tastes of wheat, floral notes, citrus. Light body with a dry finish.

drfabulous (9115) - Lexington, Kentucky, USA - SEP 15, 2015
12 ounce bottle. Yeasty wheaty beer withs some lingering smoke. The smoke is too whitefish for me.

Shot (576) - Westerville, Ohio, USA - JUN 19, 2015
Bottle. Pours hazy gold with a fluffy white head that dissipates to a thin layer. Aromas are clove, smoked malt, fruit and cheese. Fruity esters--citrus, grape; sweet malt; smoked oak; clove. Slight herbal hop tones. Thin, watery mouthfeel. Clean finish. Very interesting flavors. Refreshing.
