COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Josephsbrau Plznr (pilsner) is a celebration of noble hops from central Europe. This style of beer was developed by German brewmaster Joseph Groll in 1849 in the town of Plzen (Pilsen), Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) and was the first beer to be brewed golden and clear. This beer’s pin-point fine bitterness is perfectly accentuated by its crisp body.

12oz bottle. Looks like this is replacing the older "Hopfest" but they are describing this as a Bohemian style pils instead of German, and I would agree with that here. A little on the darker side of gold, with a spicy hop aroma and a little bready malt to back it up. Fuller in the mouth for the style but very clean. Some sweet bready malt and earthy and spicy noble hop flavors. Not too far from Urquell or the like but not one of my favored examples of the style. Not a bad choice at Trader Joe’s awesome pricing, but not quite as refreshing as I like a pils.

Mild grain and floral hop aroma, pours a clear amber with a full white head. Light bodied, a touch of biscuit sweetness, then floral hop notes. Very mild lingering bitter finish. Not much going on here, but for a low cost pils, it’s not bad.

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of straw with some sweet grains and just a hint of grass underlying. Flavor combines grass and sweet grains with some straw underlying.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright golden color with a large foamy yellow-white head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was faint with some perfumey hops. The flavor was bitter, dry and perfumey. Long finish. Light to medium body. Meh.

12 oz from TJs pours pale gold, with a half inch white head with decent retention. just about perfect clarity and some lacing as the beer is drunk in the tall glass. aroma is of light bready, biscuity malts, herbal, spicy Noble hops. the taste is light malt sweetness balanced somewhat by significant bitterness with some hop spices. body is medium, with crisp carbonation, and creamy texture. there is a mild astringency there. the beer finishes dry and short although I notice an uncomfortable astringency that almost turns harsh after the fact.

A basic pilsener doesn’t do much. A safe play by Trader Joes manages to reflect the basic essence of the style but quickly bores. If I hadn’t known it was done by Gordon Biersch I would have guessed as much.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated transparent body shimmers under thick white head. Grainy citrus pops up briefly before it disappears like a ghost. No frills or depth is present here beyond the required profile.

Flavor / Palate - Lemon wedges, light sunshine, and calm bitterness resemble an average "beer" that you would find at any bar. With little fanfare it fades into nothingness. No glaring flaws present themselves however it is not memorable either. This is just a notch above a macro.

Malty-nutty nose like a true pilsner. Some slight resinous notes. Clean malty flavor, but with a coarse bitterness. Medium body. Harsh bitter finish. Maltiness is good--seems like a genuine step-mash pilsner, but spoiled by a harsh bitterness. No true noble hop flavor. Tweak the hop bill and this could be a winner.

Dark gold beer with a white head. Aroma is significant grain. Refreshing afterbite. A bit on the malty side, but I guess that’s where a beer should be
