3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a murky brown with a little red hint. 1 finger head that quickly dissipates that leaves no lacing. Boozy bourbon, caramel aromas with hints of fruit. Hint of tobacco. Mildy sweet, mildy bitter. Carbonation too effervescent. Medium to heavy body, sticky mouthfeel. Long, woody finish. This has a great taste.
"a foamer, even with a very gentle pour. pretty straight forward light porter-type ale. not a lot of depth, thin body. still has some nice roasted malt characteristics, and you can taste and smell the rye, but it’s pretty subtle. i was hoping for better..."

Nice oaky dark malt aroma. Pours a strong lasting head, dissapating into a 2cm thick lacing. Taste is very sour, which lingers long after drinking. Overly carbonated. Not the rich porter taste I was expecting. Found it difficult to finish. But that’s probably just a reflection of my palate, not the beer. To give the brewer credit I do enjoy the kaimai golden rye ale. skortila (5967) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - FEB 12, 2014
Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma is quite fruity cassis/brambles, has some rye. Black coloured beer with an off-white, frothy head. The taste is light roasty, bit sour, very fruity with some lemon, rye and brambles. Not too good. BOSSbrewer (2705) - Arkansas, USA - AUG 12, 2013
Brown to dark amber with a thick tan head. Somewhat sweet with good hop bitterness. Medium bodied. Not bad. seymour (2076) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - MAY 11, 2013
Tasted from an 11.2 oz brown bottle into a nonic pint glass. Very cool-looking bottle, but thick foil wrap over a twist-off cap makes no sense. It poured an opaque dark reddish brown colour with HUGE fluffly beige foam, so thick it took multiple slow pours to drain the bottle. Aromas of coffee, toast, roasted grains, dark malts, very fruity and pepper yeast aspects like a Belgian Dark Strong Ale. Full flavours of caramel and brown malts, chocolate, toffee, plums, raisins, figs, molasses, somewhat sour, more hops in the flavour than aroma, smooth alcohol, faint oxidation and soy-sauce in a good way. Light-medium body, spritzy carbonation, woody, earthy, smooth and creamy, with a lingering tart and toasty aftertaste. This is AWESOME beer, I absolutely did not expect to love this so much. I want more.

Brown with an off-white head. Aroma is full of rye, toffee and cocoa. The flavor is similar with rye, toffee, nuts and caramel. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. madmitch76 (25101) - , Essex, ENGLAND - FEB 2, 2013

Hazy dark red - amber beer, tidy pale tan head. Light palate, dry. Tangy fruits - dark cherry, raspberry and some dark berry fruits. Dry finish. Trace of rye spice. A curious beer, not quite had anything like this before. Like the tangy fruits but where is the dark malt.

Hazy fizzy dark brown with sweet caramel nose. Spiky jarring carbonation with over autolysed Marmite yeast, astringent malt and a touch of chocolate. Too far oxidised, drain pour unfortunately.
I was really looking forward to try this beer. It’s been a while since I did, but I did not like it. Too pungent, sour, close to being unpleasant. I will give it another chance, maybe a different batch...
