Beligan-sytle dark strong ale made with locally sourced apple cider and autumn spices. Malus is a unique beer, specifically conceived and brewed to celebrate our inaugural bottling. It is inspired by a traditional Belgian style, but redefined by locally-sourced ingredients. We replaced Belgian candi sugar with local apple cider reduced in our kettle over several days, and used our locally-sourced house Belgian yeast for primary fermentation.

On tap at Crest Tavern in Wildwood Crest, NJ. Pours a garnet color with no head. Aroma is sweet malt with apple cider notes. Flavor is bittersweet fruity malt, with pronounced Apple juice notes. Sweet sticky mouthfeel. Lots of boozy notes as well. Herbal hops in finish are subtle. This is a sipping beer for sure.

Bottle from winter 2014. Murky reddish-brown color no lace. The smell IS apple cider; sweet, spicy and just a little booze. It also tastes sweet and spicy with apples. Balanced with an earthy but thin layer of soil and malt. Thin body that strikes as boozy but only after a finish of candi apple, nutmeg and cinnamon. It’s all a little bit of sweet, boozy and fruit but vanishes before it sticks around at all. The aging did some good I believe. Could grow with the years.

Had this on tap at the Morris Tap & Grill. I’m a fan of Belgians and strong ales overall so this was an easy choice on a menu that was over-bloated with IPA’s. Served in a snifter, sticky head occupied the glass above the brew which was a cloudy copper color below. Aromas of yeasty bread and citrus. I wasn’t sure when the deScription said made with apple cider, I’m not a fan of fruity beer, but it was worked in well, not overpowering at all, the yeast did their job in melding it into the total package. Came off more like a Barley Wine to me than a strong ale, but it was very enjoyable, smooth and easy to drink, won’t hesitate to order this next time.

Draft at Barcade, 1/11/16. Murky, dirty put, almost yoohoo like color and consistency. Sweet aroma of apple juice, Belgian yeast and some spice. Tastes much the same with a sweeter start leading to spice and a bit of booziness on the close. Alcohol is fairly well hidden. Decent, ugly, but decent.

Bottle. Dark ruby. Belgian yeast with red apples. Big cinnamon notes on the finish and some warm booze. Average texture, slightly sticky, maybe a little maple syrup character. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home. Thanks, Pat. Hazed copper pour with a thin layer of off-white foam. Smells like apple, pear, spices, and raisin. A bunch of caramel and toasted grains as well. Flavor is oddly bitter. Tons of bitter, dry spices. Sweet baked apple, some burnt grain, and burnt mashmallow. No thanks.

Bottle. Pours a muddy brown with beige head that lasts leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is dark fruit and bready malts. Medium mouth with strong caramel, candy sugar, belgian spice. Decent.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2015 Bottle, courtesy of saultbauls... shared in a location remote of my dining room.
Pours a hazy brick red with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is sweet with lots of brown sugar, spices, apples... it smells very much like a dessert.

The flavor is Christmas cookies, some light bitterness is there, it’s nicely sweet but note overbearingly so. It’s got some apple to it, but surprisingly little.

I don’t now, it’s pretty nice if you’re in the mood for something like this.

Bottle from brewery. Subtly winey Belgian ale with strong apple cinnamon flavor. Oddly devoid of aroma.

Bottle. Color is rusty red with loads of head. Fizzy apple and caramel mouth with a lot of booze
