Ripple is an American-style Session Ale. When we began conceptualizing this beer we were looking for the best platform to showcase a relatively new hop called Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand. We first began experimenting with Nelson when we were brewing single hop beers for the 1st annual ” Wolf Among The Seas,” our educational hop experience. We really enjoyed the subtle flavors of gooseberries and sauvignon blanc grapes that characterize this hop, but because the flavors are delicate and require large amounts of hops, we thought the lighter malt bill of a session ale provided the best base on which to build this beer. Maintaining body in such a low ABV beer was very important to us, so we added a large amount of low crystals and flaked oats to our base of Pilsner malt. Nelson is a unique hop, but to avoid a finished product that was one dimensional, we rounded out the hop flavor with a small amount of Simcoe for bittering and added Amarillo and Citra to the finish and dry hop. Ripple has the body, flavor, complexity, and the hop profile you expect from our beers–all at a sessionable 4.6%.

A wonderful beer, juicy bright and lemony. I had a whole lot of these in bottles when they were for sale. Ton of citrus flavor. Only problem is the price. I guess maybe Nelson Sauvin is an expensive hops variety? Can’t understand how these were $6 a bottle considering the ABV. Then again, as good as the beer was, why am I complaining?

18/XI/16 - 50cl bottle @ Seb’s Farewell Tasting (Eugene’s place) - BB: n/a (2016-1322) Thanks to ElManana+1 for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy pale blond beer, small creamy white head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: fruity, bit earthy, tobacco notes. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very nice hoppy start, soft bitterness, lemony touch, bit grassy, quite some grapefruit. Aftertaste: very bitter, citrus, more grapefruit, bit earthy, hoppy, resinous and piny finish. Loved this one!

50cl bottle, courtesy of El Manana + 1 @ Sebletitje’s Farewell Tasting.

Thank you ElManana + 1! 500 ml. bottle sampled @ Sebletitje’s Farewell Tasting. Very hazy orange with a creamy white head. Nose is very milky orange peel, clear yeast, white grape, low grain. Taste is very mellow milky white grape hop, low green grass hop, very mellow, yeast is bit too dominant. Milky body, white grape. Easy drinking, pretty decent but not exemplary.

Bottle shared by ElManana & Sanne @ Sebletitje’s Farewell tasting. A bit hazy yellow color, average sized white head. Aroma and flavor are both absolutely delicious: so hoppy, grapefruit, so much fruit hops, lovely fruit hop bitterness. Delicious!

Bottle shared @ Sebletitje’s Farewell tasting. Pretty bitter, yeasty and some odd spiciness. Fair enough.

callmemickey (4561) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 17, 2016
Lightly hazy golden body, medium sized white head, soapy lacing. Nice pine, tropical, clean herbals, and citrus. Malt base is out of the way. Medium to light bodied, moderate to lively carbonation, clean, refreshing bitterness, dry throughout.

Bottle thanks to Seth. Pours a cloudy yellow orange with medium white head that lasts. The aroma is strong dank, citrus, grape. Medium body, juicy hop, dank, light dry finish, very nice.

Pours a slightly cloudy, pale golden orange color with straw/ripe banana edges and a half finger white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Decent retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Floral earthy hop aroma with citrus/tropical fruit sweetness and a prominent pale malt backbone. Dank, resinous and spicy with fresh cut grass, hay and subtle pine needle character countered by tart grapefruit, pineapple and lemon zest. Pale malts with bread, biscuit, some light fruit sweetness and faint booze. Fuller body than expected with a crisp, spicy hop bite up front that lingers over the sweeter notes and pale malt backbone into a nice dry finish. Resinous and earthy with oily hops, dank nugs, grass and earthy pine countered by a sweet tropical/citrus hop presence that’s stronger than the nose suggests. Juicy pineapple and mango flavor along with some ruby red grapefruit. Very fresh and flavorful providing a nice counterpoint to the dry bitterness. Pale malt backbone underneath but doesn’t interfere at all with the complex hop profile. Some biscuit and a touch of light fruit, notably apple and pear. Clean, well balanced and very easy to drink. This is a really nice session beer that is light enough to pound but doesn’t compromise on flavor. Another solid beer from Kane.
