This year’s 22nd Anniversary beer is a Vanilla Imperial Stout, with a portion aged in bourbon barrels for nine months. The barrel-aged beer was then blended with a fresh batch of stout, along with the addition of fresh split Madagascar vanilla beans. The bourbon and vanilla flavors perfectly complement the dark chocolate and warming fishing of this 8.5% sipper, making it an ideal dessert or after dinner drink.

PhillyCraft (7979) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 13, 2011
Bottle from Texas Liquors in Carlsbad. Pours an orange hued black color with aroma and tase of bourbon, milk stout, tangy hops, delicious roasted malts, and sugar crystals. Finishes with a dryness and vanilla aftertaste. Glass retained alot of spoty lacing and maintained a nice off white medium head. Not too bad.

Bottle. Pours with a very deep brown body and a large tan head. Head stays around for a while and good lacing is left. Aroma has a good bit of vanilla on it. Seems nearly exaggerated. Also a bit of acetone. Toffee, chocolate, alcohol, fudge, estery, fruity, lightly woody. Graham cracker crust. Cologne. Flavors of alcohol, tobacco, fudge, ashy. There is something odd or possibly off, but I am having a hard time putting my finger on it. Very bready and biscuity. Creamy bubbles. A bit thin. Kind of BA RIS Lite (and I just had a Velvit Merkin, this is kind of brief and thin). It seems to be missing a lot of roast and viscosity for a big RIS. This lack of roast also comes through in the appearance, clear and a fairly light shade of brown in the edges. Not a great imperial stout. Tasty beer, but not great.

22oz bottle: pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a sweet toasty dark caramel malty nose with good dark chocolate character and some vanilla and bourbon notes. Body starts with pretty good fullness and dark malty sweetness with dark fruits and chocolate flavor well balanced with vanilla and bourbon oak before a semi-sweet finish with lingering dark chocolate.

Thanks to HMF for the bomber! Poured cola brown, but not much deeper, with a buttermilky white head. The aroma picked up sweeter chocolates first, backed by rich vanilla beans and bourbon sweetness.. light-moderate roast to it.. very sweet, and just decadent on the nose. The vanilla beans and sweet bourbon just dominated the flavor department, with oak and lightly metallic bourbon providing some tartness on the edges.. darker chocolate and a hint of licorice deeper down.. more vanilla and barrel presence with a kiss of dark chocolate on the finish. Medium-bodied with a whole lot of sugars on the palate.. the tartness and flavors from the barrel treatment complemented it well, and I think more than 25% of the blend would have been too much.. all in all a very good brew.
