The 23rd Anniversary Old Ale was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels and is the first Karl Strauss barrel-aged beer to be offered unblended. Its loaded with complex layers of toffee, molasses, dried figs, and toasted oak. A pronounced warming bourbon flavor contributes to the beers 12.2% alcohol contentmaking this strong ale an ideal after dinner sipper or accompaniment to desserts like bread pudding. The company only bottled 413 cases of this beer, encouraging fans to enjoy one now and lay another down several years. This beer is only going to get better with age, says Segura. As time passes, the bourbon character will mellow and more of the dried fruit and vanilla flavors will come out.

On tap @ Karl Strauss Sorrento Valley 2/16 This was quite a surprise! Not overly hot (Im sure itll be negligible with some time). Pours a nice light brown with good carbonation. A nice, pleasant sweetness that isnt overpowering. The bourbon character is strong still, which actually adds to the flavor instead of distracting from it. Lots of toffee, caramel, bourbon, oak on the taste, really quite a treat honestly. From a bar that is literally across the street from my work, Im very disappointed that I didnt find out about this beer 2 weeks ago, but Ill be sure to get my fill before the kegs finally kick.

have realitivly enjoyed the annivarsary releases prior to this .. . dark coco brown .. mouth of medium fizz .. soft sprinkles of lacing .. . dirt, chocolate, booze, cardboard from valentines, and vanilla bums .. . mellowed quite a bit but didnt really have the girth to follow .. . . I did a burp! When the moon burps, Jupiter looks on disgusted...

From notes. Tasted some time near the summer of 2012 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle. Pours clear orange/amber with an average beige head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is malty caramel with tons of vanilla and maple oak. The flavor is even maltier, huge, with the same vanilla and maple from the nose. The body is syrup full with medium minus carbonation and a long malty and bourbon finish.

640 ML bomber Light brown sugar color, persistent white head that settles to a collar through drinking. Sticky ABV legs. Nose is bourbon, oak, vanilla, toffee, burnt brown sugar, dark fruits and figs. Nice array for the nose. A little more towards the brown sugar, and toffee but quite nice. Taste is in line with the nose but add in some coconut and pretty much dialled in. A little thin in the taste and quite barrel forward. Sweet and sticky feel. More brown sugar, toffee and coconut in the feel. Quite slick. Medium bodied and well hidden ABV. Nice beer that will continue to develop more

Bottle. Hazy dark copper pour with a red hue and a light tan head. Bourbon, light vanilla, and dense, sweet malt. Taste is clean bourbon up front with nice vanilla and even some minor coconut before giving way to alcohol spice and a heavy, sweet malt backbone. Theres not much really going on with the malt profile but the bourbon character is nice and compliments the heavy malt with some trailing alcohol heat. Coating mouthfeel. Straightforward and enjoyable.

Bomber purchased at Bine & Vine fifteen months ago ($10.99). Pours a very hazy brown-amber hue with a half finger of beige foam that quickly recedes to nothing. AROMA of rich toffee, chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, maraschino cherry, and some spice. FLAVOR of dark caramel, vanilla, pipe tobacco, mild chocolate, molasses, and a bit of woody bourbon. Finishes with a moderated sweetness. The quite high ABV is really well concealed here. Another quality anniversary brew from Karl. (50, 801)

Thanks, Miller! Another pretty impressive Anny ale from these folks, this one a fine and dangerously drinkable old ale. Deep brown pour with orange tints, silky and cloudy body with a nice firm head. Some dark notes mixed with grand marnier qualities in the nose, finished off by strong wood and rich fruits. Body is quite lively, even though it maintains sipper characteristics. Ultimately comes across like a slightly bolder Curmudgeon. Good one.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Orange with a white head. The aroma is very nice. I get a lot of oak character, as well as some vanilla and bourbon. There is also some sticky molasses character and some toffee. The flavor is very similar. I get some bourbon, as well as the associated oak, vanilla and maple. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
