COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The 23rd Anniversary Old Ale was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels and is the first Karl Strauss barrel-aged beer to be offered unblended. It’s loaded with complex layers of toffee, molasses, dried figs, and toasted oak. A pronounced warming bourbon flavor contributes to the beer’s 12.2% alcohol content—making this strong ale an ideal after dinner sipper or accompaniment to desserts like bread pudding. The company only bottled 413 cases of this beer, encouraging fans to enjoy one now and lay another down several years. “This beer is only going to get better with age,” says Segura. “As time passes, the bourbon character will mellow and more of the dried fruit and vanilla flavors will come out.

22 oz. bottle shared by Keir- thanks again, Keir! Pours a clear copper color with a small white ring for a head. Aroma of caramel malts, toasted sugar, sticky toffee, tea, and a little bit of oak and bourbon. The flavor was basically the same- sweet caramel, sugars galore, and a little boozy heat. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, sticky mouthfeel. My guess is that this needs a little time to sit and maybe some of the complexity will open up.

Thanks to StefanSD. Nice old ale featuring pleasing sherry like oxidized malts, vanilla, oaky. Strong and sweet but not cloying with vanilla-caramel flavors and a tingly alcohol finish.

Bottle at Chriso - 25/09/12. Slightly hazed amber with a thin off white head. Nose comprises toffee, nuts, sweet caramelised sugars, dark fruits and a little booze. Taste follows nose and I also detected almond tones. Medium to full body with a dry astringent finish. Decent enough but no world beater.

Bottle, 10/31/2012. Pours clear dark ruby amber, thin light tan head. Aroma thick with smooth bourbon notes, vanilla and wood, plenty of dark toffee fruitiness. Flavor follows suit, though without as much depth-whiskey, light vanilla, dark bread, subtle roast, dry caramel and oak, booze. Medium palate, yet still a bit thin for the ABV. Pretty nice all the same, definitely enjoyed this one.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed orange hued body with a retentive off-white head. Aromas show big maple like, candied, burnt caramel, chewy sweet malt character. Wood, brown sugar, low dark fruits, wool. Flavors are of brown sugar, nutmeg, melanoidins, spicy oak, caramel. Already some oxidative notes. Woody. Boozy and a bit thin with medium carbonation.

Trade with JHogan4. The aroma is bourbon, toffee, fruit. The appearance is reddish brown, white head, big-time carbonation bubbles. The flavor is bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, fruit. The finish is bourbon warming, sweet. Medium in body, a little thinner than expected. really good, but it should probably be laid down, to mellow out the bourbon flavors a bit. Thanks, Jeremy.

Bottle from Bev4less: Appeared as a dense mahogany/ burnt orange hue that was topped with a thin foam head. Aromas is mild with a thick malty backbone while a dominate nose of bourbon and wood barreling comes off strong. The drink is intensely sweet that has a sugary taste of syrup and caramel malts, but is masked behind a boozy punch of bourbon whiskey. Really hits me hard with alcohol.

Bottle. Hazy dark copper pour with a red hue and a light tan head. Bourbon, light vanilla, and dense, sweet malt. Taste is clean bourbon up front with nice vanilla and even some minor coconut before giving way to alcohol spice and a heavy, sweet malt backbone. There’s not much really going on with the malt profile but the bourbon character is nice and compliments the heavy malt with some trailing alcohol heat. Coating mouthfeel. Straightforward and enjoyable.

6 dec 2013, bottle. Pink/orange, clear, no bubbles. Nose is honey, sweet malt. Med body and moderately fizzy. Sugary, golden syrup, mild alcohol, cherries. Nice!
