25 years in the brewing industry. It takes a pair. A pair of guys who know how to build a brewery with character. For such a momentous anniversary, we needed to go all out. We brewed a robust Doppelbock: a seriously rich, malty lager with caramel flavors and a plum-like fruit character. Then, we kicked it up a notch and aged it in oak barrels for an entire year. This Doppelbock has everything you want this time of year: it’s toasty, warm, and ages like a champ. Enjoy a beer with as much character as the brewery that created it. Cheers to our first 25 years, and the next 25 to come.

Ordered by mistake, but a very enjoyable barrel bomb of a beer. If there’s a fault, it’s that it’s too sweet, but damn, on a cool day? Hits the spot. Warming bready vanilla malt and alcohol on the nose and palate. Super smooth. A touch hot as it warms but nice.

Appearance: Pours dark brown with a rapidly subsided head. It fades to near nothing within a minute.

Aroma: Graham cracker, bourbon, vanilla, milk chocolate covered caramel, dark fruit.

Taste: Dark chocolate, raisin, prune, toast, burn caramel, nutmeg, oak, bourbon.

Mouthfeel: Warm, low yet lively carbonation, thick but not sticky.

Overall: The most barrel forward beer from Karl Strauss to date! If you can snag one of these, make sure to share it with someone. It’s big and tasty, but trying to drink the entire bottle yourself will be a chore. Definitely cellarable.

On tap at Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours near black with a rich tan head and an alcohol and treacle aroma. There is a slightly sour dark molasses and vanilla flavor with a bourbon trail.

Bomber from Bine & Vine. Pours ruddy dark brown with a foamy beige/tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, treacle, and substantial woodiness. Full bodied. Flavor is lightly treacle, very oaky/sour, and quite dark fruit. Flavor oscillates over sour/treacle/wood. Complex and very interesting. And quite tasty.

Caramel in color, aroma of bourbon oak, notes of caramel, dark fruits with oak and bourbon notes throughout... Solid ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap for beer week! Aroma is very strong of the alcohol from the bourbon. Flavor might be pure bourbon. Not getting much doppelbock. Kind of a miss to me. I really wanted the doppelbock to come through.

Tap at brewery. Pours dark with khaki head. Aroma is oaky, some sweet fruits. Taste is dry oak, something off-putting about this. Really disappointing.

ABUSEDGOAT (2820) - California, USA - FEB 21, 2014
Lighter orangish brown color, moderate to small light tan head, some lace/retention. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, light alcohol. Medium bodied, moderate sweetness, light alcohol. WAY too much barrel character. Reminds me of stuff I used to drink from Weyerbacher.

On tap @ Karl Strauss Costa Mesa. Almost black in color with a small, short lived, khaki head. Aroma is quite boozy. Lots of alcohol, bourbon, and a bit of acetone. Some green apple, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. Kind of seltzery, too. Flavor is boozy, harsh, and acidic. Lots of alcohol, green apple, and acetone. Some oak, chocolate, and roasted malt. Very mild dark fruit/raisin and nuts. Not really any redeeming qualities to this.

This beer is definitely something special . It has a deep dark brownish reddish hue and the flavor has so much going on. I’ll do my best to describe the notes I’m getting . In the nose you have a malty, yeasty characteristics , you also have that oak bourbon caramel in the backdrop. There is not much carbonation nor a head just a light silky lace on top. The flavor is dramatic , heavy on the mouth feel , nutty ,vanilla and slight light bourbon note on the back end , raisins and dried fruit detected as well . This brew is a smack on the kisser!!! I definitely recommend this potion its something different and very enjoyable. Cheers!!!
