COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Color was honey orange. About a finger width of head. Dusty white lacing on the top with some bubbles in the middle. Sporadic film on the sides, but not as much as I thought there would be. Smelled huge hops right in the beginning. Citrus hops as expected with grapefruit seeming to be the leader. Also tangerine in there, too. Tasted a bit stronger on the alcohol side than I expected. Tons of citrus hops. Seemed to be more tangerine than grapefruit, but it was tough to tell. Bitter on the tongue after. Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Bitter abrupt finish. I had high hopes for this beer, but it didn’t quite live up to my billing. I’d probably try it again though.

Aroma contains citrus, vanilla, malts, caramel. Appearance is a dark gold with a cream colored foam top. Taste is incredibly creamy, big vanilla taste with nice hops and malts accompanying. There is a big caramel finish with a light bitterness. Overall, this is an interesting one. I like how thick and creamy it is with a light hop taste. Could use a little more balanced flavoring but besides that, it’s an enjoyable cold one. I’d give this a B rating.

GABF 2011. Clear brilliant gold under a dissipating whit head. Big grapefruit aroma with some burnt caramel, floral and resinous tones throughout. Taste was smooth delightful grapefruit, tolerable bitterness, mild oak tones. Very floral as well. Big body, long nice linger, with a small boozy warmth. Big yet balanced, with bitter hoppiness and caramalt sweetness. Eccentric and complex.

[Bottle] Clear golden-orange hue, modest head formation. Caramel malt aroma with hoppy pineapple juice and grapefruit citrus. Grapefruit dominates the palate, spiced hoppiness from start to finish, ending particulalry bitter. Grapefruit distinctive and long lingering in the aftertaste. There’s an orange alcohol flavor mid palate too while the sugarry caramel malt backbone is light but present.

Great double IPA. High in alcohol content at 9% but when you taste it, it does not taste like 9%. Great find, a different tasted from the tower 10 IPA but they are both great.

Bottle from HH22... Great nose on this beer. Lots of tropical grapefruits, orange, and pines notes. Reminded me of 3F Dread. Decent pour....orange in color, average head. Taste is decent.... bet its great on tap. Pine notes, orange, tropical juices.. little on the sweeter side but not sugary. Malty notes as well. Medium body, average carbonation. Overall: wish I could have this on tap.... but still a nice dipa. thanks Tim
