COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come. According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and theyre planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

In short: malty DIPA.

Bottle on my 2nd day in San Jose(10/11). Clear brilliant gold under a dissipating white head. Big grapefruit aroma with some burnt caramel, floral and some resin. Taste was smooth delightful grapefruit, tolerable bitterness, mild oak tones. Very floral as well. Big body, long nice linger, with a small boozy warmth. Big yet balanced, with bitter hoppiness and caramel sweetness.

22 oz bottle. Fuzzy peach brown with a white head. Nose is toffee, spiced apple cider, dough and mild pine. Juicy medium body, a touch syrupy and resiny, just enough carb to lighten. Taste is orange juice concetrate, grass, juniper and grapefruit peel. Too tilted toward the sweet side.

Golden color with a white head, good retention and nice lacework. Aroma has notes of citrus, grapefruit, medium maltiness. Flavor has a decent bitterness with good duration. Very fruity, notes of grapefruit, light tangerine and slightly citrus hints, notes of resins and pine as well. Bittery final, very fresh with good duration.

Nice bottle from mr. snojerk. A solid well balanced IPA with a touch of hop bitterness but a lot of malt back bone and sweetness. It reminds me a lot of an orange jolly rancher. Hint of citrus flavor is preceeded by a smothering hop nose and sugar notes. Finish is smooth and slightly bitter.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2009 Rerate; much better, cant understate that. This time from a bottle. A good balance in this one, with a good hop profile. Citrus, fruit and earthy. On tap at Carlsbad location. Color was a ruddy amber with a compact creamy head. Aroma was weird; wood chips, caramel, must and BO. Flavor was also pretty weird; and actually it was pretty terrible initially. It did get better, but really weak for the style.

On tap at the Old Columbia brewpub. Has a sweet honey aroma, also some butterscotch to the scent. Light amber with a thin white head. The flavor has delicious hop citrus grapefruit and mango. This beer has an intense malt flavor. A very classic IPA-like palate. Its good beer but its not great.

Bottle from Zinister.
Pours an average cheddar orange with a nose of lightly malted grapefruit and organic pine. Flavor is bready grapefruit banana. Oily mouthfeel. Not bad.

Tasty, well-made double IPA, but it lacks stand-out charisma. Rich, malty flavors of cocoa powder, bread and light toffee. Hops offer subdued tropical fruit flavors and a mild grassy bitterness. Big alcohol is hidden well. Overall, its decent, but it lacks personality and uniqueness.
