COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

The Sauvin tropical flavors and aromas are big and center. Yes grape and vine aromas too. Backed up solidly by a more standard west coast hop profile - citrus and pine, this is a solid brew. A bit too sweet but otherwise very good.

Pours clear golden with thick, solid sheets of lacy head. The nose was spicy. The flavors, they were hoppy, spicy, piney, and a bit resinous... the body was thick and syrupy, yet not too much so...the hops tend to turn grassy...the alcohol is pronounced, yet not really hot...there’s a stinging wetness thoug...a residual bitter metalicness of the hops, but really...in an overall setting...its not too shabby for the overrated style of double fucknut IPA.

March 23, 2014 - via bottle at Karl Strauss Universal. Cloudy orangish yellow with large head that lasted and lacing. Aroma was piney and citrus hops. Taste was malty and fruity with a dry mildly bitter finish. Palate was medium to full and slight carbonation.

A pretty solid double IPA. The pour is amber orange with a finger and a half of yellowish head. Aroma of sweet tropical fruits and heavy hops. Banana, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, grass. The middle is sweet and fruity with a complementing maltiness. The finish is bitter and prolonged with a nice hop bite. Not a hop bomb, but very appetizing.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Super fresh bottle, got it as they were off-loading the truck at the liquor store.. Pours a translucent copper color with a big off white head that slowly fades and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. The aroma is light with mixed fruits, bubble gum and a bit of perfumy soap. The taste is vibrant with crisp hops, citrus, hazelnuts, white pepper and some caramel. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is clean with a bit of hops and some sweetness lingering. Overall: This is an outstanding DIPA, I can’t believe its a Karl Strauss. Compares favorably to Alpine Nelson.

22 oz bottle. Clear amber/orange with a small off white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, citrus and bread. Flavor is lots of sweet caramel malt and a mellow bitterness. Medium body with mild carbonation and a soft, smooth mouth feel. Pretty good IPAx2 on the sweeter side.

From the tap into a growler from downtown location: Poured a golden honey color with a tiny formation of foamy head which did leave behind a trace of lace. From the nose, there are is an assortment of hops giving a combination of citrus and sticky green hop. The flavor comes across well with a perfect balance between malt and hop while the hops tend to dominate a little more. Minor hints of lime citrus and ginger, however, this isn’t a double IPA I would mention as a top contender of the category but meets the standard requirement I have.

I really like the Nelson Sauvin hop. The grape taste is great. It works so weel with the hop bitterness. This is more of a regular IPA than a double.
