COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

22oz bottle acquired in trade (thanks Tim!). Poured a medium to deeper golden color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, some floralness, fruity (my 7 year old said pears), and pine. Tastes of floralness, citrus, lighter fruitiness, and some caramel. Lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content well hidden.

(22oz bottle) Pours a hazy golden orange body with a medium off-white head. Aroma of pineapple, orange, florals, caramel, and pine. Flavor of hops (pineapple, grass, grapefruit, pine) and caramel malt with a bitter finish.

Aroma and flavor subdued pineapple and floral notes - didn’t see a date but didn’t seem terribly fresh. Still pretty bitter. Just ok with the potential to be better.

The Nelson Sauvin hop was really interesting in the Mikkeller single hop, and it is masterfully used here. First comes the "white wine" taste (and the aromas are lovely grapes) and a good one at that, then in the finish, other hops put the beer into 90 IBU territory, so hops in your face. Nebver harsh, this was an absolute delight and worth seeking out. Above average mouthfeel, a great smooth drinker. Kudos to my southern neighbour that sent this one.

22 oz bottle. Courtesy of olio. Thanks! Cloudy golden color with a tiny white head. Strong sweet resiny hoppy aroma with malty sweetness and alcohol. Strong and sweet. Strong hoppy bitterness, pungent bitterness, some sweetness and mild malty balance in the flavor. Very strong hoppiness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber. Slightly hazy vibrant yellow-orange pour with a white head. Aroma is mild pineapple, but I’m getting just a hint of cardboard peeking through here as well. No date on the bottle, but I’d be surprised if this was very aged, as everything else I bought from this store on this day seemed quite fresh. Kind of a juicy taste, nice hop bite, fairly clean yet dry finish.

hopscotch (11447) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 4, 2010
Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Clear golden ale with a nice, creamy, white head. Excellent retention. The aroma is a mélange of earthy, piny, citrusy hops with just a kiss of butterscotch. Full-bodied and ultra creamy with soft carbonation. The flavor offers some nice, earthy bitterness, but overall, it’s way too sweet for a double IPA - even for me, the ultimate malt head. Tasty, though. Lengthy, sweet finish. Kudos to growler for popping the top on this one.
