COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

Picked up a bomber bottle at Spirits of St. Germain in La Jolla, California. Pours a clear, warm amber color with a small, off-white head. It has a really nice aroma that is full of citrus notes (most notably orange), with hints of alcohol peeking through. There’s a subtle, light bitterness in the taste which complements the big, caramel malt flavors. Medium bodied; coats the inside of your mouth, and leads to a fairly long, resinous finish and aftertaste that have lots of herbal and fruit (apple?) notes. Overall, it’s a really interesting and tasty beer. Definitely the best Karl Strauss beer I’ve had yet; I don’t typically find their beers to be particularly great, so this is a welcome addition to the lineup.

Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours hazy orange gold with a white head. Nose is orange creamsicle- malt, caramel, orange, tangerine, vanilla, and apricot with kumquat. Flavor is similar with lots of creamsicle and citrus mixed with vanilla. This medium-bodied IPA finishes with lingering citrus and tangerine hops.

Great double IPA. High in alcohol content at 9% but when you taste it, it does not taste like 9%. Great find, a different tasted from the tower 10 IPA but they are both great.

Big thanks to Paulie T. for this one. Rated from memory during the Michigan vs. UConn game. Wow did that not go the way it was supposed to. Nice hoppy aroma. Pours a brilliant dark amber with a thick white head. Taste is rather malty, some alcohol comes through as well. This is a beer you will want to try if you can get your hands on it.

Really tasty beer! This IPA is fruity and piney, and for 90 IBUs, it only seems like 50. Really smooth and hints of pineapple, apple cider, and a bit on the sweet side. I highly recommend this one!

20oz bottled I shared with my good firiend and a hop addict from San Diego, Paul, at Karl Strauss at the Universal Studios. It was my last beer at the end of my L.A. Visit. Aroma of citrus, malt, some alcohol. Color was shiny golden yellow. Taste citrus, bitter hops, malt backbone. Alcohol present but smartly hidden. Overall a great fresh and hoppy DIPA with more hops and less malt. I like that.
