Poured from a draft into a pint glass at Karl Strauss Brewery in La Jolla, Calif. Color was black. About one finger of head. Bubbly cloudy lacing. Healthy amount of film that was evenly spread out on the glass.
Smelled of toffee and chocolate malts.
Tasted similar to the nose with chocolate and toffee malts leading the way. Also some caramel in there. Good tasting beer.
Medium body. Creamy slick texture. Average carbonation Smooth finish.
I really liked this beer. It was smooth from the get-go and was perfect for my mood. Lagunitasfan (1323) - San Diego, California, USA - JAN 26, 2012
Urge. Black with fizzy eggshell head. Nose light roasted malt and high sweetness. Very light nose. Taste light flat malty smack with only a hint of sweet. Not a lot there but is good for the style. DenverLogan (1305) - North Bend, Washington, USA - MAR 10, 2008
Very dark brown; lingering small brown head. Rich and smooth...easy drinking, rich malts but not overpowering. Creamy, great balance of rich roasted malts, cocoa, grains but with a slight sour fruit finish. On tap at Churchill’s. papajohn (1250) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - AUG 13, 2010
Sample from the tap in Sorrento Valley: Dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is malty with a wiff of black coffee. Flavor has toffee, chocolate and light coffee with a dry, bitter bakers chocolate finish. Light body is crisp with moderaste carbonation. jimbowood (1036) - Freeport, Georgia, USA - DEC 30, 2005
Tasted on draft @ the brewpub in downtown San Diego. Pretty beer to look @ with good lacing. I thought this was a really malty porter when I tasted it. Oats, sweet malt, with little bitterness present.

A very dark brown color with tan head just clinging to the glass. A sweetish aroma with whiskey and malts. Oaty flavor with malts, caramel and a hint of caramel. AbeerWolf (27) - USA - JAN 30, 2008
Smooth, rich flavor that tapers off after the first couple of sips. Aroma is slightly hoppy with the chocolate malts coming through after. Body is lively but not overwhelming. Good overall beer that is perfect for a warm San Diego evening.
