Saarlander (1920) - Saarlouis, GERMANY - APR 28, 2006
On tap at Universal. Abit of hoppiness for the style with this one, good balance, nice drinking beer, dark fruit, but very easy drinking.

Sampled at the Carlsbad location on 11/30/06: Pours a mostly opaque with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Toasty grainy malty aroma has some light fruit notes and a lager yeast profile. Body starts effervescent and lightly sweet with some dark caramel and a touch of raisins toward a bready dark German malty finish. Pretty true to style.

From the tap poured dark brown black with a fair amount of head. Nice malty flavor with a quick finish.

cloudy brown, smooth brown head. nutty aroma, roasted malts, dry, brown aleish. flavor is roasted malts, slightly floral note (hops?) roasted, at times charred charchoal like malty bitterness. Decent scwarzbier, close to how they taste in Germany. Also quite clean.

On tap at Carlsbad location. Color of dark brown with a light chocolate head. Aroma of chalky malt, roasted malt and cocoa. Flavor was chalky, roasted and cocoa. Fairly standard for the style, lacking anything special. Palate was a bit watery. Just ok.

BückDich (5477) - McCall, Idaho, USA - MAR 4, 2006
Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla: Light tar color, nose of fruity dark plum and raisin, some dark caramel and light roast. The flavor is a bit metallic and thin, comparatively. Decent tail.
