On tap @ Karl Strauss Brewing. First, i’d like to note that i find Karl Strauss beers usually lacking in quality but, this is phenomonal! Aroma is unique, soft caramel, bread and molasses. Color is straight black. Taste is very complex with some flavors of nuts, dough, oats, molasses and bittering hops. Very bitter with strong malts. Thick palate presence, finish is lingering with the remaining starch on your tongue thanking y ou for such a good beer.
Bomber purchased at BevMo in Escondido ($5.99). Pours very dark brown with a bit of reddish highlight and three fingers of dark tan foam. Aroma has major pine forest off the bat followed by citrus, dark roasted malts, smoky chocolate, and moderate coffee. Flavor starts off hoppy with citrus and pine notes but is soon overtaken by the black part of "Black IPA" with notes of cocoa powder, roasted nuts, spicy rye, dark chocolate, and some earthy coffee. Creamy mouthfeel with well-concealed ABV. Good one for the style and quite a nice price. (31, 698)

Very dark brown with a garnet color under a strong light and a long lasting tan head. Roasted malt and cocoa aromas with an earthy quality. Very spicy and dry on the palate which is a great expression of the rye. The dryness is cut by a smooth bittersweet chocolate and cocoa flavors and some grassy/herbal notes. Slightly creamy and not heavy at all with a sweeter milk chocolate flavor towards the end. Leaves a dry, coffee like flavor behind. Pours black with 2 finger frothy light brown head. Nose- chocolate and roasted malts, coffee, rye and resin. Medium to heavier bodied with flavors of earth and roast, chocolate malts, biscuits, some herbal and resin hops subtly making an appearance. Spicy nuanced finish. Pretty good though not elite.

This beer has a deep dark look. It has a bitter sharp flavor. It is somewhat flavorful but a little too strong.

Pours black with a thick light-tan head. Aroma is RYE, spicy, brown sugar, some fruit and chocolate. Taste is rye, dry, sweetness, grapes, creamy, coffee finish. Medium carbonation. Nice, creamy mouth feel.
