22oz bottle -
While walking the aisles at my local BevMo, I keep seeing the same selection. But out of the corner of my eye, I see a stack of new Karl Strauss beers and quite the nice price at less than $5 a bomber. And like any good beer geek, I had to get one.
So on a Sunday afternoon after my Raiders gave a beatdown to the Jets of New York, I popped the cap to this one and was quite suprised at what lay in store for me. The beer poured out an inky, jet black body with a eruptive 3-finger dirty white head. Aroma had a thumping chocolate/hoppy 1-2 punch with some support from char, smoke and a light meat marinade. Flavor started out with an up-front and center roasty malt note like a porter or a stout, but then the tarty-rye character shows up and it starts to stand up to the roasty notes. Pepper-like notes show up around mid-palate and combine the roasty-ness of the malts, the bitterness of the hops, the tartness of the rye and the spicey/peppery-ness of maybe the yeast and this is one damn good beer. Creamy mouthfeel, fantastic lacing left behind. Kudos for making a great, great beer. J_man (996) - Tustin, California, USA - AUG 13, 2011
Very dark brown with a garnet color under a strong light and a long lasting tan head. Roasted malt and cocoa aromas with an earthy quality. Very spicy and dry on the palate which is a great expression of the rye. The dryness is cut by a smooth bittersweet chocolate and cocoa flavors and some grassy/herbal notes. Slightly creamy and not heavy at all with a sweeter milk chocolate flavor towards the end. Leaves a dry, coffee like flavor behind. This is a really nice black IPA with the added bonus of rye in the mix. ChazMania (669) - Oceanside, California, USA - NOV 14, 2011
Bomber poured into glass- huge aroma that reminds me nearly of a smoked porter, that burnt smokey aspect. Dark brown nearly black beer, more carbonation on it than my previous rated beer the Off The Rails. Taste is good with some bitter chocolate along with a nice full body. Much better beer than the previous Karl Strauss beer I was drinking. gvmdw7 (188) - California, USA - JAN 6, 2013
Poured black with little head. Smelled mostly of coffee, but had some bourbon notes. Tasted of coffee, chocalate, and had a nice spicy finish. Serve a little warmer than normal. shoulderbroken (4255) - Tokyo, JAPAN - APR 28, 2013
Bottle at Antenna America. Black coloured with golden head. Aroma is caramel, roasty, slight fruitiness, beefy. Taste is bit savoury, fruity too, chewy, quite strange but nice, fruity cherry and strawberry. Nice and roasty too.

Poured a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is a rich roasted malt, coffee and molasses. Wonderful.
The taste is rich as well. Roasted malt, rye spice, coffee just a little bit burnt.
The texture is crisp with low to moderate carbonation.
Quite delicious. IrishBoy (4199) - Bakersfield, California, USA - JAN 12, 2014
Bomber from a little market here at our hotel across from Disneyland. Nose is slightly charred rye toast, with hints of nuts, floral, and vanilla. Black with a medium, heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly bitter with some notes of roast and sweet. Nice to drink after a long day of walking and riding big rides and the bomber was the same price as a small glass of Karl Strauss at the Beer Kart in Disneyland. skmikeg (1826) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 12, 2011
Pours a dark black with a tan head with spotty lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, pine resin, some coffee, and some rye spicyness. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, pine, citrus hops, bittersweet chocolate, and peppery rye notes. has a medium full body with a creamy, somewhat oily moutfheel, and dry bitter, somewhat sour finnish from the rye. overall, a very nice beer that shows off the continuing improvement of Karl Strauss. Pours black with a thick light-tan head. Aroma is RYE, spicy, brown sugar, some fruit and chocolate. Taste is rye, dry, sweetness, grapes, creamy, coffee finish. Medium carbonation. Nice, creamy mouth feel. daleharshman (1064) - Escondido, California, USA - MAY 12, 2012
Bomber purchased at BevMo in Escondido ($5.99). Pours very dark brown with a bit of reddish highlight and three fingers of dark tan foam. Aroma has major pine forest off the bat followed by citrus, dark roasted malts, smoky chocolate, and moderate coffee. Flavor starts off hoppy with citrus and pine notes but is soon overtaken by the black part of "Black IPA" with notes of cocoa powder, roasted nuts, spicy rye, dark chocolate, and some earthy coffee. Creamy mouthfeel with well-concealed ABV. Good one for the style and quite a nice price. (31, 698)
