On tap @ Karl Strauss Brewing. First, i’d like to note that i find Karl Strauss beers usually lacking in quality but, this is phenomonal! Aroma is unique, soft caramel, bread and molasses. Color is straight black. Taste is very complex with some flavors of nuts, dough, oats, molasses and bittering hops. Very bitter with strong malts. Overall, this is fantastic! slightly thick with complex flavors. My new favorite from Karl Strauss. A+ rating. DedicatedToFun (4000) - Santa Monica, California, USA - OCT 2, 2013
Super awesome black ipa, bomber from whole foods, rich dark ipa, roasty, piney, kickass StefanSD (2451) - Ouray, Colorado, USA - JUL 1, 2011
UPDATED: JUL 2, 2011 Taster at Bev4less. Black pour with a medium tan head that had good retention. The aroma is sharp with chocolates and some burnt toast. The flavor is more of the same, lost of roasted malts, biter walnuts, spicy breads and burnt toast. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and biter. Overall: Very tasty. gorditoabd (636) - San Diego, California, USA - AUG 15, 2011
Bomber. Pours rich dark black with a good two fingers of tan foam. No real rye presence in the nose, mostly dark toasty malt and bitter coffee notes. Taste is a pleasant surprise up front, as a rye-filled malt assault hits the tongue, with a touch of bitter black coffee rises up and then gives way to an almost tart rye finish. Solid body, nice mouthfeel, oily and slick, and pleasant lasting finish. Booze is present but well integrated. Good brew. Strykzone (7430) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - MAY 13, 2012
Bomber from Hayduke. We shared it via facebook chat. This was very dark and had a tan head that settled with big bubbles bursting. The aroma was chocolate, anise, roasted notes, and swamp. The flavor began with chocolate and licorice but there was so much going on and so many layers to the flavor. Quite late I was finally able to taste hops and they were citrus and grassy. This beer kept changing personalities and was a blast to taste. I knew there were hops in there but had to peel back layers of other interesting flavors before they were exposed. As well as interesting this beer was also quite tasty. What fun to try. Fortunately I had a bomber and not just a few ounces because the complexity required some time to explore.

Sampled in a bomber. Pours deep brown with a thin head on it. The Rye is subtle but smooth and compliments the hops. Malts are smooth as well. saxo (18945) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - JUL 17, 2012
Tap @ the brewpub, San Diego. Nice head with good duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are rich hops, roast malt, coffee, chocolate and has a long bitter finish. SHIG (4962) - Wasilla, Alaska, USA - SEP 3, 2012
Bottle shared by Savnac: Poured black with a light brown head. Aroma is nice hops, roasted malt and light chocolate. Taste was gritty hops, roasted malts, and soft chocolate. Finishes spicy on the tongue. DuffMan (10456) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - OCT 30, 2012
Bottle, shared with Gripp and Parksy.very dark brown, beige head. A nicely balanced BIPA, with good expression of both the roast and the hops, subtle chocolate notes. Couldn’t find any rye character in here but I didn’t care. Nice body, nice balance. LtDan (1806) - Los Angeles County, California, USA - MAY 25, 2011
On tap at Beach to Brewery 2011
Appearance: Pours a rootbeer brown with a thin film of head.
Aroma: Orange like hop. No roast to be found in the nose.
Taste: Grapefruit, tangerine, bitterness with minute roast.
Mouthfeel: Juicy, medium bodied, moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is what I look for in a Black IPA. Big citrus, little roast. Well done.
