Tap @ Carlsbad brewpub. Black pour with a quickly thinning tan head. Aroma is rye and roast with chocolate perhaps light coffee and minimal hop bitterness. Taste is heavy on the roast with chocolate and rye with background bitterness. Nice roasty beer but more of a hops presence would be nice. tkrjukoff (4334) - SWEDEN - AUG 29, 2013

Bottle from Beer Revolution. Pours black with a thick tan head and a citrus aroma. There is a dry treacle and rye flavor with a bitter pine finish. ghawener (1615) - Santa Tecla, EL SALVADOR - JUL 12, 2012
Draft: It’s good but undefined, I’d rather drink a brown ale or an IPA, but not both. Time to work on a differente style, IPA & DIPA are being destroyed. Food Pairing: Fish and Chips + Cheese platter.

I had this on draft at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa. At first it tasted a bit thin and watery, but as I got further along a nicely balanced roasty, hoppy beer showed up. BillKismet (4165) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 11, 2011
Black forest body topped with a perfect, browned, hop-pocked, cream head. Spicy and prickly nose - probably a combination of PNW hopping and assertive rye. Rough black malt notes. Acrid ash notes with definite bitterness. Dry, bitter, and charry finish. The hop bitterness grows more distinct with each sip. BMan1113VR (7930) - Los Angeles, California, USA - OCT 10, 2011
Bottle. Pours with a near black with a large and thick brown head that has pretty decent staying power and good retention. Aromas of fruit. Strong citrus, orange and grapefruit with a considerable amount of esters. Light roast, coffee, some spice and a bit of a metal character as well. Tobacco, chocolate, light dark fruit. Flavors are quite roasty, toasty and spicy. Roast dominates and finishes a bit nutty, dry and acrid. Thin, dry. Spicy. Moderate hop flavors of pine and citrus (somewhat unpleasant, but I don’t particularly care for Ahtanum hops, which I think this uses). Roast, lightly astringent, lasting bitterness. Thin, warming, medium bubbles. The roast and even somewhat astringent malt character dominates the hop character (that said, I am picky on which Black IPAs I like).
