I liked it but it’s kinda weird. Probably better beer without my "judging hat" on, enjoying the toasty/creamy character that was not terribly unlike Fat Tire. Described as "Belgian" but doesn’t taste much like any Belgian beers I’ve had. But I’m no expert. Bready. skmikeg (1826) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 21, 2009
Pours a medium brown with a frothy beige head. aroma heavy on roasted malt, baked bread, hazlenut, and yeast. flavor is interesting with some roasted malt flavors, bread, hazelnut, spices,a little vanilla, and a little banana from the belgian yeast. has a medium body and a warming and dry finnish. overall, I was suprised at the quality of this one, which ended up being quite good considering the brewer. Pours a light brown similar to other brown ales. Smells of molasses and yeast hit you at first sniff. Taste of bread, yeast, and caramel. A strong brown. thick aftertaste. A good seasonal that keeps you warm with 6.3% ABV. badlizard (5533) - Berkeley, California, USA - DEC 17, 2009

On tap at Hamilton dark brown with a fizzy head. Sweet but earthy ashy aroma and taste with a dry finish.
Bottle from BevMo. Dark ruby in color upon pouring. Somewhat roasted nose. Some banana from the yeast as well. Roasty up front with a good deal of yeastiness. Fairly sweet. Quite a bit of spice in there. Finish is fairly roasted. I am impressed, much more interesting than I thought it would be.

6th rate for this beer. Tap at the other Lucky Baldwin’s. Nose is a candy glaze over a roasty US porter. Color is flat dark black. Tastes very slightly like a dark rauchbier but then flattens and sweetens with dark spices. Went great with the bread pudding. Snojerk321 (2960) - San Diego, California, USA - DEC 9, 2009
12oz bottle from BevMo. Pours a very deep copper color with a frothy beige head that left nice lacing. Nose was lightly spiced with some roasted malts and ground coffee notes. Flavor is also very roasty with some faint coffee and cocoa, finishes with a light hop bitterness. LtDan (1806) - Los Angeles County, California, USA - DEC 9, 2009

On tap @ Hamilton’s. Pours a medium brown with a frothy off whit head. Nose had some dark fruits and a touch of Belgian yeast funk. Flavor was lightly fruity with again a touch of Belgian yeast.
Numba 4 in bottle - Appearance: Pours a clear dark amber brown with a white pin stripe for head.
Aroma: Fruity Belgian yeast, dry bready malt and a slight sweet cherry note.
Taste: Bread crust, fruity yeast, both of which remind me of a doppelbock. Finishes bitter.
Mouthfeel: Low to medium carbonation. Medium bodied.
Overall: A nice new beer from Karl Strauss. If you were bummed years ago on Red Trolley or Endless Summer Light, its time to revisit the folks who are now making this and Tower 10 IPA. elguapo47 (13) - California, USA - DEC 9, 2009
Served on Tap, High Dive Bar
Aroma- malty, coffee notes, hints of vanilla.
Appearance- mahogany brown color. thick off white head that lingered.
Taste- firm toasted malt flavors. peppery quality from the belgian yeast. hints of vanilla, figs, raisins. coffee too.
Palate-medium body, with an almost creamy quality to it. average carbonation. fruity, clove quality to the warming, dry finish.
Overall, a pleasant beer for the winter. nice balance and flavor hints makes it good for a few rounds. gotbeach (139) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 18, 2009
Tap @ ks sv. Decent brown ale with slight belgian yeast aroma and flavor. Odd thin soapy aftertast.
