Draught at Karl Strauss, Carlsbad. Clear deep amber/mahogany beer with a nice lasting beige head. Malty chocolate aroma, yeasty notes, caramel, dark bread, grassy, hay, figs, some cocoa. On tap @ Karl Strauss Costa Mesa. Brown pour with a slight haze and khaki head. Aroma is toasted malt, peppery spices, and sweet banana and fruit esters. A touch of nuts and chocolate as well. Flavor has a nice sweetness and minimal bitterness. Some spices, chocolate, nuts, and toast. Good banana, caramel, and bread. Draft sample. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted sweety malt and small yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Poured a darker brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, woody, vanilla, and somewhat earthy. Tastes of vanilla, chocolate, lighter woodiness, and caramel.

Bottle… Clear, deep copper ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Great retention. The bouquet is of chocolate malt, banana and dark fruit esters overlying a modest clove phenol. Full-bodied and creamy with tingly carbonation. The flavor awards milk chocolate and dried dark fruits – complex. Lengthy, mashy, bittersweet, dark fruit finish.
