Karl Strauss Parrot in a Palm Tree

n San Diego, we’re not known for our partridges or pears but we can all relate to those noisy parrots and their relentless “caroling”. Parrot in a Palm Tree is a robust Baltic Porter brewed especially for the Holidays. Aged two months in San Pasqual Tawny Port barrels, the resulting brew isn’t for the birds. This winter warmer boasts a complex bouquet of dark fruits, espresso and chocolate, with hints of oak in its warming finish. Raise a glass to 2010 or save a bottle as this limited release will age with the best of them.

Big bold wood scents and flavors, has some nice chocolate and black licorice like flavors.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a tan dense creamy 1 inch head.

Aroma: Chocolate covered shortbread cookies, cherry cordials and hazelnut.

Taste: Dark chocolate, roast, coffee, tart cherry, black forest cake, slight spicy hop. Slight barrel note in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Creamy rich mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Balanced, complex dessert beer. I don’t think this one will age well past a year mark, and it’s really in prime drinking shape now.

Aroma kaffe och chocklad. Smaken likaså men kanske en liten nyans av frukt ?!

Served from a 22 oz bottle from OTM. The appearance is a nice brown black with a medium sized foamy pale brown head. The aromas are chalky medium roast malts, and some light fruit additions. The flavors are medium roast malts, raw oak staves, raisins, the roast level builds, more dried dark fruits come in to play as well. The mouth is medium bodied and cola carbonated which gives it any artificially filling full mouth. Comes and goes but overall pretty decent.

Thanks to daknole. Bottle pours deep brown with a tan head. Aroma shows notes of chocolate covered dates, espresso, vanilla, and light roast. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of toffee, raisin, and oak.

Little bit of a let down. Pours dark, chocolatey brown with a thin offwhite head, specks of lace. Smells subdued, sweet roasted malts, chocolate and some booze. Tastes sweet and chocolatey with roasted malts and some sweet barrel booze that builds towards the finish. Medium body, tries to be full but not quite, ok carbonation.

On tap at O’Brien’s in San Diego with my bros. Rich, deep, and dark. Dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, coffee. Creamy and oaky in the back. Thought it was a stout when I was drinking it. Clean finish. Nice!

Growler to go from Sorrento Mesa location: Dark brown color with an initial medium, fading beige head. Aroma to me is light milk chocolate with a hint of coffee and cream. Flavor starts smooth with some dark fruit followed by dark chocolate, a little coffee and a light bakers chocolate bitter finish. Medium body is creamy with moderate carbonation.

22oz bottle, thanks Alex. Pours with a nice big even head and fluffy lacing. Quite dry and roasty with a peppery finish, hints of wine, toffee and raisins. Roasty patent malt, burnt nuts, toffee, coffee, licorice, oak, peat, light raisin. Touch more port notes would had been nice.
