This was cold and wet and what I needed. It had been a few dry days. The beer was malty with a decent amount of hops but the beer was buttery and sort of flat. I was not happy with paying 7 bucks for a pint.
This is the first beer I had from karl strauss and the one that made me a fan. I enjoy that roasted malts and toffee like flavors with hints of dates and currants amazing beer. The first dark beer that I enjoyed. LAbrewcrew (7) - , Alabama, USA - FEB 2, 2009 does not count
This is a great red, full bodied ale. The beer doesnt taste like a full bodied beer because it is so easy to drink. Very smooth with a fruity like finish to it. ocbeergoddess (6) - , California, USA - FEB 2, 2009 does not count
This red ale has great flavor, with a slight sweetness to it. It is a fuller body beer with a toasted malt flavor to it. I really enjoy the smooth finish. Had this with some bbq chicken and it was delicious! DSG (14784) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - JAN 18, 2009
(11/2/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in downtown San Diego. Clear red-amber color. Aroma of malt, some nutty notes, some toasted hints and light dark fruitiness. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, some toastiness, a bit of nuts and light fruitiness. Medium-bodied with strong carbonation.

Tap at Carlsbad. Pours a translucent copper amber with a small bubbly off white head. Aroma of toffee, nuts, light citrus and caramel. Flavor of the same. Moderate hop bitterness. JohnnyJ (5562) - San Diego, California, USA - JAN 5, 2009
Not very good at all, I would not buy this. Sweet caramel malt, small amount of hops. Fairly easy to drink, it just doesn’t taste good though. I would not get this unless it was free. Brewsmith (148) - Torrance, California, USA - JAN 5, 2009
On tap at the Chili’s in Torrance, CA. Aroma has a hint of malt, not much hops in there. Amber red with a small tan beige head. Smooth malt flavor with a slight hint of chocolate in there. Caramely and a little sweet. Easy drinking and dry in the finish. Well made and no real flaws. Could be a little more assertive. JoeMcPhee (9427) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 30, 2008
Tap at La Jolla location. Deep amber/copper colour. Toasted nutty aroma with a soft estery berry fruitiness. Flavour is quite well-balanced. Light fruit and soft sweet maltiness. A light toastiness and a softly fruity finish. Pretty nice session ale really. Good balance and much better than I ever expected. bryandhargrave (165) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - DEC 7, 2008
