On tap, Karl Strauss at the San Diego Airport. Dark copper pour, with ruby highlights. Light tan head, with fair amount of lace. Not much of a nose, but what there is of it is malty. Malty flavor, caramel, nice body, mild finish. Very refreshing. badhack (554) - San Francisco, California, USA - JUL 24, 2014
Red, malty, dark caramel flavor without being obnoxious. Sweetness under control. I thought the aroma was similar. Slightly nutty, mild bitterness. bikesandbeers (547) - san diego, California, USA - FEB 21, 2008

Schöne rote Farbe, zügige Perligkeit. In der Nase Röstmalz, Pflaume, Karamell. Im Trunk kräftig malzig, leichte Frucht, mittig alkoholisch, im Abgang nochmal stärker Malz. Sehr schön rund und doch komplex. Sehr lecker.

On tap at brewery. Very watery taste, not impressed at all, was hoping from tap would be better than bottle. Not great Sask89 (514) - Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA - SEP 1, 2013
Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a small tan head. Aroma is largely of caramel malts, with a slight hoppy backbone. Taste is sweet up front with a nice bold bitterness through the finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouth feel, and softer carbonation. Overall this was my favourite of the Karl Strauss brews I tried. bastarda (502) - Freiburg, GERMANY - JAN 8, 2016
shared with Konfuzzi Dec/15. aromas of dark caramel malts with a nice hint of wood/oak. Tastewise quite a let-down, too watery, diluted caramels, flat, boring. cmc619 (501) - California, USA - JUN 2, 2011
About time I rated this San Diego classic. From bottle into regular pint glass. Pours an attractive, dark red-brown. Head is thinnish and dies in a minute, although I’m not confident that this glass is "beer clean." Aroma is doppelbock--hopless sweet malt. Flavor is pretty well-rounded (within sweet overall). This beer feels great on the tongue; palate is perfectly balanced. I think I’ve had this beer fresher before, so this rating might be higher on another review. A pleasing dark red color. Deceptive hoppy smell, with the taste being much more of a malty, somewhat caramelish taste. Very creamy.
