copper color, aroma of caramel, roasted nuts, flavor of roasted nuts, roasted caramel, some dark fruits, bread, toast, not bad for the style

On tap at brewery. Very watery taste, not impressed at all, was hoping from tap would be better than bottle. Not great

Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a small tan head. Aroma is largely of caramel malts, with a slight hoppy backbone. Taste is sweet up front with a nice bold bitterness through the finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouth feel, and softer carbonation. Overall this was my favourite of the Karl Strauss brews I tried.

About time I rated this San Diego classic. From bottle into regular pint glass. Pours an attractive, dark red-brown. Head is thinnish and dies in a minute, although Im not confident that this glass is "beer clean." Aroma is doppelbock--hopless sweet malt. Flavor is pretty well-rounded (within sweet overall). This beer feels great on the tongue; palate is perfectly balanced. I think Ive had this beer fresher before, so this rating might be higher on another review.

A pleasing dark red color. Deceptive hoppy smell, with the taste being much more of a malty, somewhat caramelish taste. Very creamy.

Pours a very nice red color with diminishing off white head. Almost no aroma to speak of. This is a very mild brew. Light caramel malt, no hops and a bland finish. Lively carbonation and I find myself searching for the "beer flavor" in this one. Is this a light beer? Not a bad quencher at all, although I would like more flavor.

shared with Konfuzzi Dec/15. aromas of dark caramel malts with a nice hint of wood/oak. Tastewise quite a let-down, too watery, diluted caramels, flat, boring.

Draft. Nice red hue and a slightly sweet finish. Drinkable with a decent body. Slightly underwhelming.

The best of their sampler. A decent amount of hops and a touch of malt. Pretty good for a maligned style often horribly mangled by chain brewpubs.

Schne rote Farbe, zgige Perligkeit. In der Nase Rstmalz, Pflaume, Karamell. Im Trunk krftig malzig, leichte Frucht, mittig alkoholisch, im Abgang nochmal strker Malz. Sehr schn rund und doch komplex. Sehr lecker.
