Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a small tan head. Aroma is largely of caramel malts, with a slight hoppy backbone. Taste is sweet up front with a nice bold bitterness through the finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouth feel, and softer carbonation. About time I rated this San Diego classic. From bottle into regular pint glass. Pours an attractive, dark red-brown. Head is thinnish and dies in a minute, although I’m not confident that this glass is "beer clean." Aroma is doppelbock--hopless sweet malt. Flavor is pretty well-rounded (within sweet overall). This beer feels great on the tongue; palate is perfectly balanced. I think I’ve had this beer fresher before, so this rating might be higher on another review. A pleasing dark red color. Deceptive hoppy smell, with the taste being much more of a malty, somewhat caramelish taste. Very creamy.

Pours a very nice red color with diminishing off white head. Almost no aroma to speak of. This is a very mild brew. Light caramel malt, no hops and a bland finish. Lively carbonation and I find myself searching for the "beer flavor" in this one. Is this a light beer? Not a bad quencher at all, although I would like more flavor. The beer poured a brown color w/ orange highlights; thin lasting head and medium lasting lacing. The aroma had malt, and caramel, but it was thin. The flavor had a hint of chocolate and caramel, malts, and a hint of candy. The mouthfeel was lt to medium bodied, and creamy.
