By no means a bad beer. While it doesn’t blow me away, it is highly drinkable, has a great red-like amber color and smells of toasty hops with a tiny hint of vanilla/caramel. I think it’s one of the better Strauss beers, but it’s not exceptional.

Draft at the downtown brewpub. Light medium malt aroma. Reddish amber color with a creamy off-white head. It laced a bit. Medium body; moderate carbonation. Sweet dark fruits, but not too dark, and some carame/toffee malt. Not much bitter. Arguably a very flavorful amber. Finish is not quite dry, and again, not much bitter.

On tap at Universal City location. Aroma of currants, some alcohol, a bit of caramel and maybe some smoke or scotch. Pours with an off-white head with some lacing over an amber body. Taste is of soggy malts. Its too fizzy and a bit harsh.

Brilliant copper/red with a tight tan head. Sweet toasted caramel aroma. Medium body. Decent spicy toasted caramel flavors are easy on the palate. Not too bad.

papajohn (1250) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - SEP 7, 2003
Red amber color with a medium off white head. Nose is light and sweet. Flavor starts caramel sweet and ends with a slight sourness. After taste has a hint of bitterness.

Draft. Poured deep reddish brown with a creamy off-white head that lingered well. Sweet malty nose, with hints of spice. Very malty, sweet ale with a slight hop presence. A little unbalanced as an amber ale, really reminded me more of a scottish style. Smooth, medium body and creamy carbonation.

Not a huge fan of Ambers, not a huge fan of Karl Strauss. This one is just OK. Let's just say it's drinkable.

This beer has lots of aroma. You can smell lots of malt but the hops too. Pretty red color. Pretty good overall.

Draft, color and aroma is more like a brown then an amber. Caramel, honey, oak. Taste is too sweet, slightly spicey with caramel. Unbalanced and doesn’t show an hop character.
