Dark brown with a medium beige and creamy head. Sweet aroma with hard roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Flavour had hard roasted and slightly burned malt, coffee, liquerice and hints of dark chocolate. Finished sweet. bb (9525) - Alamo, California, USA - JUL 20, 2010
Draft. Black beer with a tan head. Coffee and roast aroma. Coffee and roast flavor with light chocolate. Medium bodied. Coffee and roast lingers with light chocolate. Big coffee presence. rotoguru (126) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 9, 2010
SD trip, Karl Strauss LaJolla, sampler, had these while having a larger DIPA, flavors and ratings may be rough: The description here says "Retired" but this is clearly what I was told was the special selection on the sampler; perhaps it has been brought out of retirement for another run. That said this dark brew has strong coffee and black malt nose; flavor is black burnt malts. Nothing too exciting. papajohn (1250) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - JUN 4, 2010

Valley location: Jet black with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolaty with a hint of coffee. Flavor starts chocolaty sweet followed by a light coffee bitter finish. Light to medium body is smooth with moderate carbonation. Much improved over the sample I had a couple of years ago.
Nitro at San Diego Brewing Company. Nice black pour with tight bubbled head. Aroams were some chocolate. Flavors were watery, but there was hints of roasted bitter coffee. Just OK

Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Beer pours almost black. Flavor is more coffee, chocolate, and suprisingly crisp hops. This is a relatively lighter styled stout. It is also very carbonated and bitey on the palate. It is definitley a pleasant offering from this fine brewery. JohnC (3008) - Mission Viejo, California, USA - MAR 23, 2006
I had this on draft at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa, CA.
nice roasty aroma and slightly sweet flavor, this was a very drinkable stout. Not bad.. BückDich (5464) - McCall, Idaho, USA - MAR 4, 2006
Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla: Dark black, nose of char and sweet licorice oatmeal. The flavor is almost sweet with some tart and astringent qualities. Finishes lightly hoppy with a harsh metallic note. Decent sweet stout. Pjones6738 (500) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 9, 2002
Black as night, smoky taste. My notes aren’t very good for this one, just not a very memorable beer. Sickboy282 (1114) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 9, 2002
After having th oatmeal stout, I thought this would be a bigger better brew, but it was one of the worst stouts i’ve had on tap. Do not get this if you are at the resturant. Not drinkable.
