This Hefeweizen by Karl Strauss seems to fall right between the American and German wheat beer approaches. Naturally, theres a slightly cloudy yellow appearance. Bavarian-type aromas with banana, clove, and hay. Flavor starts off with those same notes, then theres a more American-style grain sweetness that takes over (rather than a dry, yeasty finish characteristic of a German wheat ale). Theres a subtle vanilla sweetness, which is nice. Right at the end, theres an overly sweet canned corn note, which is not so nice. Apart from that unfortunate ending, Windansea is a well-executed wheat beer with a lovely, creamy depth to its body and a great range of flavor.

A very nice suprise, tasted on draft at Strauss Universal city. Much more flavor than I was expecting, nice fruitiness, creamy, nice on the tongue, Good example of an American brewer doing a German style hefe.

Part of a sampler in San Diego. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Aroma of banana, citrus, and cloves. Similar flavor, a light beer. Decent overall.

Barreras (1646) - Diamond Bar, California, USA - FEB 17, 2013
Pours a cloudy yellow with a lemon zest aroma. Taste is crisp and a bit gritty because of the unfiltered beer. A refreshing beer that would be nice on a warm day. A hint of sweetness, possibly vanilla that makes the aftertaste nice and mellow.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow color with very little head. Light, malty aroma with some lemon zest as well. NIce, wheaty taste with lemon and malt. Nice balance and easy to drink. Refreshing.

Pours gold with a small head. Nose has a strong banana element, mixed in with a touch of plastic. Flavor is vanilla and banana, with mineral aromatics and straw/bread. The dominant flavor is banana and grainy bread, not bad at all. Mouthfeel is refreshing.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2009 Served far too cold and with a huge lemon wedge at California Pizza Kitchen. However after warming slightly I could tell this was a solid offering. Very cloudy yellow. Not transparent at all - almost like an orange smoothy in appearance. A big frothy white head and maybe a little too much carbonation. Perfect balance of sweet/sour citrus notes blended with the classic banana and clove aroma and flavor. Somewhat dry and bitter in the finish, but a delicious beverage none the less. Rerate: Just had this a second time at Islands Burgers without realizing that Id already had it. Again served too cold, VERY high carbonation. Some weird off flavors - almost in a cheap homebrew malt kind of way. Going to knock it down a bit.

Pours super cloudy, milky looking, pal yellow with a thin white head that leaves good lace. Smells of bananas and yeast, sweet. Tastes the same. Bananas and yeast sweet, slight honey. Medium, watery body, light carbonation.
