A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12C (54F) (Translation by Martinus)

Bottle. Brown in color and poured with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, dark fruit (plum and raisins), candy sugar, and spices. ABV is well hidden. Sweet finish.

330ml bottle. Dark brown colour with a beige head, good retention. Aroma: malts, dried fruits, caramel, spices. Taste: sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, liquorice, slight warming alcohol but for the ABV its well hidden. Quite sweet so wouldnt want more than one. Rich, creamy smooth, full bodied. Decent.

Dark beer with a lovely creamy head. It has a full mouth feel with a sweetness that doesnt mask its spiciness and liquorice overtones. Unlike some other beers of the same gravity it doesnt weigh too heavily on the stomach making it dangerously drinkable. Probably my favourite beer.

nihtila (3373) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - OCT 24, 2016
Bottle from Spar in Eindhoven. Pours dark brown with beige head. Nose is sweet, dark malts, caramel, prunes. Taste is very sweet, covering a lot of other possible tastes or trying to hide the alcohol, dried fruits, sweet dark malts. What starts quite promising is hidden under excessive sweetness and alcohol.

Pours nut brown with light beige head. Aroma is caramel, cinnamon, raisins, roasted almond, alcohol, cream, some spices. Taste is quite same, creamy, alcohol, caramel, dried fruits, spices. Nice and decent beer, despite its alcohol level.

330cl bottle. Right away, alcohol, but not too boozy. Secondly, SWEET, SWEET, SWEET; almost bordering something other than beer (sherry comes to mind). Low carbonation. No head (but that is a factor of vessel/temperature/pour). Certainly smooth (no major hoppy bitterness). Not my style, personally, but I certainly see the appeal, and it is definitely a complex quality brew. The buzz from 11% will make you like it more when you are halfway through the glass. Cheers!

Opened this one for a belgian goulash with Rodenbach. Thanks a lot for the recipe Frank and Bierhandlung! Interesting grainy palate. Feels like biting bread instead of drinking a beer. Dark dried fruits and flavours of clove and mustard. Of course sweet dark malt and hints of 11%.

Offerte par mon cousin, cette belle bire noire est dune douceur sucre fort agrable en bouche. Attention toutefois aux 11 degrs qui cognent au moment de se lever.

A bottle at the Cafe Bastille, near Taipower Building. Aroma: very fruity, vinous, plummy. Not noticably boozy, despite the ABV. Appearance: in a Chimay chalice, sitting by the big floor to ceiling windows, it looked exactly, I mean exactly, like cola! No real head to speak of. Palate: full-bodied, with soft carbonation; a long, sweet finish. Taste: the alcohol is very subtle, very fruity, vinous, suggestions of caramel. The candy sweetness is too much for me. Once is enough.

Bottle. Dark brown with medium beige head. Very sweet aroma, sugar and dades. Very sweet taste, sugar, sweet bread and caramel. Zero booze at 11% Creamy body. The taste is a bit too sweet for me.
