COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12C (54F) (Translation by Martinus)

Served at ambient temperature. Dark brown color and small head. Aroma is dark fruits and some cofee. Body is full, sweet and very licquorish with some citric hints, but mostly caramel. Its not so complex, but its very pleasant to drink and the taste fills your mouth and nose.

This is, and remains, one of my absolute favourite beers for the winter months. I can taste caramel, dates, sherry, molasses and a hint of dark malt with an aftertaste thats intensely sweet but never cloying. Not at all viscous, and with very little head. I had this on tap once and it was absolutely exceptional. Highly recommended.

33cl bottle enjoyed at home in a snifter glass on 15-Nov-2016. Dark brown with a thick beige coloured head, which settles down quickly leaving nice lacing. Aroma of malt, dark fruit, cocoa, spices and caramel. Full body and medium carbonation. Taste of milk chocolate, roasted malt and dark berries - tart, light sweetness but surprisingly smooth for 11% ABV.

Bottle. Brown in color and poured with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, dark fruit (plum and raisins), candy sugar, and spices. ABV is well hidden. Sweet finish.

330ml bottle. Dark brown colour with a beige head, good retention. Aroma: malts, dried fruits, caramel, spices. Taste: sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, liquorice, slight warming alcohol but for the ABV its well hidden. Quite sweet so wouldnt want more than one. Rich, creamy smooth, full bodied. Decent.

Dark beer with a lovely creamy head. It has a full mouth feel with a sweetness that doesnt mask its spiciness and liquorice overtones. Unlike some other beers of the same gravity it doesnt weigh too heavily on the stomach making it dangerously drinkable. Probably my favourite beer.

nihtila (3101) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - OCT 24, 2016
Bottle from Spar in Eindhoven. Pours dark brown with beige head. Nose is sweet, dark malts, caramel, prunes. Taste is very sweet, covering a lot of other possible tastes or trying to hide the alcohol, dried fruits, sweet dark malts. What starts quite promising is hidden under excessive sweetness and alcohol.

Pours nut brown with light beige head. Aroma is caramel, cinnamon, raisins, roasted almond, alcohol, cream, some spices. Taste is quite same, creamy, alcohol, caramel, dried fruits, spices. Nice and decent beer, despite its alcohol level.

330cl bottle. Right away, alcohol, but not too boozy. Secondly, SWEET, SWEET, SWEET; almost bordering something other than beer (sherry comes to mind). Low carbonation. No head (but that is a factor of vessel/temperature/pour). Certainly smooth (no major hoppy bitterness). Not my style, personally, but I certainly see the appeal, and it is definitely a complex quality brew. The buzz from 11% will make you like it more when you are halfway through the glass. Cheers!
