A deep dark brown ale with a thick froathy moka head. A chocolate malt aroma with notes of prunes. In mouth, a sweet caramel malt with notes of light molasses, not enought hopping, a bit maderized. Medium bodied. Bottle from Capflu, December 2006. HazelRah (276) - Summerland, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 27, 2006
Dark and complex looking, equally interesting flavour although could do with a touch less sweetness. Good chocolate finish, though. tiggmtl (4545) - East York, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 12, 2006
Thick, rich aroma offers caramel malt some notes of roast and plenty of brown sugar and dark fruit. Darkest chestnut coloured body is clear with a decent and lasting crown of off white head that sticks to the sides of the glass. Chewy, malty and sweet flavour has a hint of licorice, a touch of smoke and plenty of raisin and plum fruitiness. Chocolate sweetness lingers in the aftertaste once the roasty bitterness has past. Light body with moderate carbonation that is engaging on the tongue and cheeks if perhaps just a bit sharp. Quelle bonne surprise! Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle (BCLS at 8th/Cambie, Oct-06). CapFlu (5127) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 18, 2006
(Draught) Sampled at Christie’s Carriage House in Victoria. Pours a deep brown body and a almond-coloured head. Nose is surprisingly rich (especially considering I wasn’t expecting anything special from this beer) with a strong roasted malt aroma. The flavour is very malted, somewhat smokey and raisin with undertones of blackberries and brown sugar. Very enjoyable beer! Trev (2023) - Lakeville, Minnesota, USA - MAY 6, 2006
Tried this a couple times on tap before I started rating and really enjoyed it.
Bottle: Pours a medium brown (is it just me looking at the bottle beside the glass or is there a reddish purple tinge to it?) with a light bubbly off white head.
Aroma is Toasty caramel with a woody hoppiness and a hint of berry fruit.
Flavour is caramel and toasty malt, medium body with a distinct though not strong hoppy presence. A lingering dry tart finish.

Bottle from Josh and served in a pint glass: Pours a deep brown hue with a small off-white frothy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of caramel and toffee malts, very light hints of currants, a touch of smoke, and a earthy yeast ester. The taste starts sweet and malty, much like a German Schwarzbier. A nice little zing of fruit does appear but is really more of a accent piece than a main component of the flavor. Finished with just a bit of bitters and smoke and some lingering metallic notes. The mouthfeel has a bit of bite at first but then conveys a chalky texture. Okay bier but needs more bright and acidic fruit to balance off the sweet malts. frink (467) - coquitlam, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 1, 2005
pours a brown colour with a quickly disappearing head. Malty nose as well as being a bit nutty. The taste was caramel, roasted malt and maybe some fruit but I couldn’t say if it was blackberries for sure. An O.K. beer. beerbuzzmontreal (3487) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 26, 2004
Pours a clear brown color with a thin off-white head. Aroma of fruits, including blackberries, with malt and brown sugar. The flavor is pretty much what the aroma advertises : rich malt, brown sugar and fruits (blackberries). Light to medium body, soft, liquorous and slightly oily texture, soft carbonation. Very pleasant brew, nice balance between the malt, sweetness and fruit. Thanks to JoeMcPhee ! Hooker (467) - Coquitlam, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 11, 2004
clean dark almost black in clolour. pungent currant malt nose. tangy taste that dances on the tongue definite currant flavours come through. very little head but with fairly good lace. JoeMcPhee (9427) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 16, 2004
Light brown with a tan-coloured head that settles back to some thin bubbles kissing the edge of the glass. Rich earthy malt aroma, molasses, brown sugar, roasted nuts, and some fruit underneath it all, particularly blackberries. Softly carbonated, some sweetness, good malt profile, fruitiness lingers a bit on the finish.
