kraddel (9659) - Antwerp, BELGIUM - MAR 16, 2018
Pours black, medium tanned head. Smell is bourbon, sharp, boozy, grainy. Taste is too thin for expectations ( medium thick in general ) very boozy. Extremely barrel forward, very out of balance. Mild acidity from the roasted malts, that really ruins the beer for me all added up. What a dissapointement...

sample from bottle, strong bourbon aroma in the nose, light layer of roast, strong vanilla, charred oak, caramel, toffee, light charred oak and toasted coconut. strong bourbon taste, maybe a bit to much. but full bodied, velvet. really tasty

PINT tasting. Poors black with no foam remaining. Aroma is super, all kind of bourbon comes to mind, wood, raisins, etc. But taste is bit disappointing, too much alcohol, to sharp. (Arnhem 201802)

Bottle at The Hague Bottleshare. Almost black with dark beige head. Strong bourbon, licorice, old wood, soft smoke, molasses, coconut, booze, light herbal, alcohol. Quite sweet and bitter. Full thick bodied. A little rough but super nice. Must share though.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2018 Limitedly produced 'impy' by Kees Bubberman, named after himself and aged for two years on bourbon barrels. Received as a birthday gift from the Arendsnest in Amsterdam and shared with my girlfriend, Ilse and Craftmember at 'Cause Beer Loves Food - a surprise of epic proportions, many thanks for this, possibly the most humbling birthday gift I ever got in my lifetime... Thanks to Timothy of 'Cause Beer Loves Food as well for the luscious deep-fried raisin bun to pair it with. Brownish mocha beige, quickly opening, moussy head lacing in dots, over a black beer with misty burgundy edges. Intense, alluring, enticing bouquet of chocolate liqueur, a lot of sweet and boozy bourbon, coffee, beef stock, vanilla-ish wet oak wood, pear syrup, treacle, baked banana, glue, caramel sauce, bayleaf, bitter chocolate bars, brandy. Densely candied sweet onset, dates and candied orange peel, very intense with a thin, perfectly measured cured meat-like umami accent surrounding the sweetness; soft carbonation, thick and oily, viscous but still sufficiently supple body. Deep-bodied and multi-layered hazelnutty, black chocolatey and butterscotch-like maltiness fills the mouth after that, developing into a long, rich, heating finish of ongoing 'chocolateness' impregnated with boozy bourbon, intensely warming without descending into unpleasant wryness, alongside a whole lot of vanilla-hinting oak wood, including drying tannins; peppery hop bitterness below provides further balance. Wow... I guess this is Kees' way of boasting that the new generation of European craft brewers are as good as any American brewery to produce a full-fledged, highly profiled American style imperial stout extendedly aged on bourbon barrels - the kind of boldness I feel Belgium is somehow lacking when it comes to stouts - and he is damn right: this is of no lesser quality than the ultimate legend in this particular corner of the beer world, Bourbon County Brand Stout, so I have no choice but to grant this an exceptionally high score. What a treat - big cheers to Ilse!

Draft @ Arendsnest. Black color. Brown head, both dense and a bit frothy with reasonable retention. Aroma's: big chocolate, boozy alcohol, roast, wood, (red) fruit. Retronasal it's sweetish, firm alcohol (even light acetone), chocolate, roasty. Flavor is above moderate sweet, roasted, alcoholic fruity. Strong alcohol feel. Full bodied. Long finish, with roast and dark chocolate. Nice, but too alcoholic.

Draft at Arendsnest, Amsterdam. Black with a small beige head. Aroma of big bourbon, oak barrel, vanilla, fudge, milk chocolate and boozy alcohol. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Full bodied with a medium thick texture, light alcohol warmth and soft carbonation. Pretty good, but let down by the not so subtle alcohol.

C: Almost no head over jet-black beer. 4/5 N: Sweet Bourbon(explosion), vanilla, sweet-smelling, rich. 8/10 T: Wood, Bourbon, sweet, vanilla, and a long, sticky aftertaste. Roast very much in check. 7/10 MF: Explosion of alcohol backthroat. Filthily rich feel. Not very carbonated. 4/5 O: Sticky, but great. At the edge of “over the top”, but still great. 15/20
