Draught @ 8th. BBF 2016 [ 8th Borefts Beer Festival 2016 ] @ Brouwerij de Molen, Bodegraven, Netherlands.

[ As Kees Da Hong Pao ].
Clear medium to dark amber brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, dark malt, sweet malt, pepper. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, barley wine alike, pepper, sweet malt, dried fruit, sugary. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Helder donkerrood bier met weinig wit schuim. Geur: rood schoenveter snoep, licht vanille, hout, wat aards en een klein zuurtje. Smaak: zoet, wat rood fruit en op het einde wat pikant. Zachte koolzuurprikkel. Medium body.

Bottled, bought online either at BierNavigatie or HetBierMoment. Dark amber colored, small beige head. Beautiful malty British Barley Wine nose, warming alcohol, marmelade, spices, hint of Christmas pudding. Sweet malty flavor, spices, warming alcohol, with pepper suddenly kicking in in the end. Imho the Barley Wine itself is absolutely fantastic, but the peppers spoil the fun a bit in finish. Still, scoring high on both quality and originality.

Small cream-coloured head, fast gone over garnet-shot amber to brown beer. Peppery notes, wood, bit of solvent. Some meaty notes, maltsyrup and melanoidins. Caramel to toffee, dried fruit as dates or figs. Syrup, rosewater, almonds; hopbitter backthroat. Quite sweet indeed. Hint at orange- or other marmalade, again dates, candied peach or melon. Less peppery than the first sniff suggested. Very syrupy-sticky feel, well bodied, medium carbonation, some alcoholheat. Rather sweet Barley Wine.

Erg lekker barley wine biertje. Flink zoet met heel klein beetje bitter. rode vruchten, het pepertje maakt het inderdaad iets pittiger maar niet overdreven, heerlijk.

33cl Bottle from Sterk. Hazy amber-brown colour, creamy off-white head. Aroma is quite sweet, sticky sweet candy, juniper, mint, smells familiar but different. Flavour is sweet, candy, mint, juniper, quite some herbal bitterness underneath, toffee, marmalade, bittersweet finish. Full bodied, slick. Good stuff, but not a lot of depth of flavour.

Pours hazy dep amber with tan head. Aroma is like my imaginative asian grandmother’s fresh from the oven buns. It’s like a fruitcake with a smoky, spicy twist. Flavour is more spices, heavy sweet and medium to heavy bitter. All the time there is a smoky tea presence.

Bottle shared at a tasting at zvsn’s place. Thanks Chen for the bottle. Brownish-red with beige head. Sweetish aroma with notes of chilli, juniper, olives and spices. Very sweet flavor with notes of chilli, a bit hot, syrupy. Medium-bodied. Too sweet.

Bottle sample at a tasting, thanks rayaron! Hazy amber color. Aroma of caramel, candy, honey and herbs. Very sweet, cloying, medicinal flavors of caramel and candy, herbal, spicy, touch of pepper, boozy and alcoholic without any complexity. Medium-bodied, syrupy and sticky. Quite disappointing.
