Hop: Fuggles, Sorachi Ace. Mout: Pale Ale, Caramel, Carafa 1, Carafa 2.

Pours oily black with a small, dark tan head. Heavy bready malt aroma, coffee, some licorice and a bit of smoke. Taste is sweet sugary malts, medium roasted, finishes with a bitter chocolatey taste. Above medium body, low carbonation, very smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle. Very dark brown - almost black, small to average and mostly diminishing dark brown head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, light - some caramel, light roastiness with light - dark fruits and light vanilla, light licorice. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish, light caramel, light roastiness with faint dark fruits and faint vanilla, light licorice and hoppyness, light alcohol. Finish is average, malty and sweetish, light caramel and roastiness, faint vanilla, light licorice and hoppyness, light - some alcohol. Nice roasted aroma with notes of dark fruits. Flavor and finish could use more bitterness to balance sweetness. Way too sweet for me.

Aroma of burnt malts, caramel, coffee. Not overly carbonated, quite smooth, oily. Flavour of coffee, quite boozy-ABV not very well hidden. Very bitter, with a long bitter finish.

Dec. '16. A 0.33 l bottle that poured a pitch black body with medium sized brown head. Beautiful aroma of coffee, dark chocolate/cocoa, rye bread (although not harsh) and even coconut out of somewhere. Flavor was lightly sweet and also bitter roasty with chocolate, coffee, mocaccino, dried fruit, especially raising, licorice, wood...touched with smooth herbal/woody/nutty hops. Full bodied, roasted, yet quite smooth on palate with a very long finish that reflected mostly the softer components of its flavor, on the sweeter side. Alcohol was warming, but extremely well hidden. Well done RIS, a classic indeed!
