In bringing together artisans from disparate aural planes, one might expect an offbeat, feedback-warped cacophony, shrill to the point of unlistenable. Yet, by inviting Kyle Hollingsworth, keyboardist for eclectic, jam-prone sextet, The String Cheese Incident, and Keri Kelli, wailing rock guitarist of Alice Cooper fame, we were able to make truly beautiful music. Turns out, these musicians have a great deal in common, both with each other and with Stone. We all enjoy turning things up to 11, and that is represented in this collaborative offering, an imperial India pale ale ably backed by Nugget, Comet and Calypso hops, and amplified care of a healthy dry-hopping with Vic’s Secret, a new Australian hop, adding citrus and tropical fruit oomph. To give this modern masterpiece some soulful, classic character, we traced the roots of brewing to the days when Old World herbs were used to spice beers, adding in coriander and, a first for us, elderberries. To stand up to that sumptuous spice and blaring bitterness, we added golden naked oats, which are lightly roasted and add body and enhanced mouthfeel to the brew like a steady, unbreakable backbeat to an incendiary jam solo. Sit back, crank the volume and get lost in this operatic incarnation of genres combined in the name of invention.

Keg at Stone Liberty Station, 18/04/14. Orange amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is bitter tropicals, orange pith, tangerine, grapefruit, caramel malt. Taste comprises citric pithdom, mineral bite, pink grapefruit, herbal notes, bitter orange, caramac bar, toasted bread, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close. Solid DIPA.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2014 22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Nose brings out resinous hops, caramel malt, and coriander - strange mix. Flavour is similar, bringing out a big caramel malt backing, with resinous hops, and medium spiciness. A little more malt than I would’ve cared, but this is still great.

Draught at the Stone Liberty Station, San Diego. Clear deep golden beer with a nice offwhite head. Hoppy aroma, caramel, biscuits, grassy, citrus, notes of elderberries, pine, peach notes. Hoppy caramel flavor, grassy, citrus, elderberries, floral, grassy, some warming alcohol. Decent IPA, or maybe an IIPA?

Draft - Peach, Passionfruit and sweet grapefruit. Hazy gold with a good beige head. Resinous with some pine and bitter grapefruit. Not nearly as juicy as it smells.

Bottle. Etched glass. Pours orange gold white head. Nose/taste of flaked oats, dry bread, dried grapefruit pith, dirty earthy caramel. Medium body.

On tap @ Hollingshead. Kind of a darker amber color than I’d typically like to see, but we’ll go with it...khaki foam. Quite fruity on the nose. A bit of gooseberry and lots of orange peel. Very floral, lightly spicy, and somewhat sweet with some caramel maltiness. Decent pine as well. Flavor has a strong bitterness to it, but a fair amount of sweet caramel and fruit. Hint of tart berry and citrus. Big time floral character. Nice enough beer, but probably better without the garbage in it.

Bottle thanks to Matt. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong pine, caramel malt, and hay. Medium mouthfeel with strong malt and resin hop, good.

Bomber from the Woodland Nugget. Pours golden orange with a slight beige head. Aroma is rather fruity. Med + body. Flavor is citrus/resin over barely enough caramel. Lots of hop. Coriander? Maybe. Elderberry? Maybe that’s the fruit aroma. Good stuff.

Ratman197 (15870) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - MAY 30, 2014
Bomber poured a clear orange amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of straw, dank bud, earthiness, pine resin, grapefruit zest, elderberry and light coriander. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, orange zest, dank bud, grapefruit, pine resin, light earthiness and a hint of elderberry with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.

Bottle sample at Vova’s Hoppy Beerthday tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Yoav. Hazy deep golden. Aroma of stale hops, some spice. Flavor has sweetish malt, stale hops, bitter finish with a spicy note. Medium-bodied. Too old.
