„Keserű Méz” – meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon – is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Fót Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. It’s bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops – Spalter and Magnum.

„Keserű Méz” is a genuine specialty from Fót – north of Budapest – and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer – Hungary’s answer to American Pale Ale.

Bottle / on -tap - Unfiltered hazy, light golden coloured beer with a thin, white head. The aroma is fruity and hoppy (Magnum and Spalt!?). Herbal taste along with a sweet malt base. Leave a really awesome bitterness in your mouth. Currently the best bottom fermented here in Hungary.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2017 Draught. Budapest Prater Pub. Color is hazy yellow. Aroma little fruity and little hoppy. Taste like hoppy lager, some herbal. Bitterness is on medium level but its residual.

Piwo mętne jak błoto, brunatne i bez piany. W aromacie trochę chmielu a trochę jabłek. W smaku to chmielowo-jabłkowy lager praktycznie bez ciała. Goryczka średnia, jak na lager to nawet nieźle. Piwo bez szału ale dodatkowy plusik za zasłużoną historię dla Węgierskiego kraftu.

The classic Hungarian craft beer. Was a revelation when it hit. I remember being really impressed years ago, after months of drinking nothing but shitty lager. Now, well, it’s good, but not amazing. Hazy light golden/orange color. Aromas of floral hops and honey. Flavor is quite sweet to start with some grassy hops, dandelion, flowers, honey tones, biscuit. Nice balanced finish, with some lingering floral hops. Medium body. Good, but not great.

Bottled. Pours deep, hazy golden with thin head. It must haven’t been a fresh one, cuz all I got was some bitter hops and not the fres ones. Meh.

Borostyán szín. Közepes, sűrű hab. Citrusos, fűszeres illat. Keserű íz, némi citrusos ízjegyekkel ellátva. Jó kis testes sör.

0,5l bottle. Cloudy golden colour with quickly shrinking and medium lasting small white head. Aroma: Complex. Citrus with some christmas spices (clove, cinnamon) and yeasty notes. Taste: Sweet and pleasent start with a slowly crawling medium bitter motuhfeel. Has some fruity tones and quite creamy texture. Light/medium body with soft carbonation. Long pleasent bitter finish. The most recognized Hungarian craft beer and a good drinking beer.

On tap @ Főzdefeszt - Slightly hazy yellow colour, medium white head with fair retention. Flowery and herbal hop nose with some cereals and buttery tones. Taste is biscuity with some honey and bread, followed by decent flowery hop bitterness. Light to medium body, average carbonation, a bit watery mouthfeel, a bit unbalanced long hoppy finish. Good hoppy lager.

Perfect amber color with nice and white head. I could feel the bitter honey with citrus taste.
