COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
„Keserű Méz” – meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon – is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Fót Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. It’s bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops – Spalter and Magnum.

„Keserű Méz” is a genuine specialty from Fót – north of Budapest – and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer – Hungary’s answer to American Pale Ale.

Bottle at Szimpla Kert, Budapest. Poured a clear light amber with a long lasting frothy white head. The aroma is yeast, citrus hop, light sweet honey. The flavour is moderate sweet, light bitter with a zesty fruit, yeast, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

draft at Szimpla Kert in Budapest. so it’s all German hops, alright, but understand that it uses so much that it smells and tastes like an American made it. don’t get me wrong, it’s a tremendous aroma, but it’s very brutish and harsh given the spiced character of the Spalter and strong pungency of the Magnum. and it does reach a level I would call excess, though an uncharacteristic juiciness and resin quality show up. and after all that... it’s fucking beautiful. my nose is drowning in it’s pungent must. there’s quite a strong cheese note, it’s insanely bitter and unbalanced but it’s fascinating. i’m sure if all pilsner or IPA were made like this where I live, I’d be sick of it in only a few weeks, but for me this one definitely gets kudos for being different and foreign to me.

50cl bottle pours a hazy, deep gold with some thin, clumpy white head. Nose is sweet and sugary, honey, malt, a little cake icing, a little banana ice cream. Flavor is sweet, light grass, light honey, some light biscuit, a little light vanilla, some chewy grain, a little light citrus. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter, slightly silky finish.
